How do they work?

I know they are laser, but does the officer in the van physically aim the laser at the car/number plate, or are they fixed within the van, and as the car/cars go past a certain point, its fired automatically. I was the third car in a row of three, so i'm hoping if the latter is correct.., hes not 'reloaded' in time.

Judging by the one on the tv tonight sits on monopod, scamera operator places the red dot on the any vehicle he chooses and presses the button. The unit is prefeed a threashold figure (49 in a 40 for S York according to the guy) and if the speed is greater captures the picture. "Reload" time for three vehicles in the same lane I guess would be sub 1 second. His record was 250 something in 2hrs.

And did he not look smug when he said "That's a lot of money!"

I couldnt understand that as he was panning the camera along whilst aiming at a car, surely the reading would be affected by the movement of the camera?

From what ive seen, the camera is set up pointing down the road and 'snaps' any speeding vehicle above the preset limit.
At the time, i was talking to the van operator (Will
Crash) outside of the vehicle and just stood in amazement at people going past us at a speed above the limit. This was with my Fully Marked vehicle parked in full view

Im not a fan of these Vans, however, on this ocassion i was pleased that all the numpties got their just deserts.

But then went on to say that he still speeds and had infact been caught speeding What a pratt!

Back to the subject, I had a similar experance in South Wales last summer. I was in a row of cars and as we came round the corner there was a van. We all braked and I was just waiting for the letter but it never came I guess I got the speed down enough before he pulled the trigger and I recon the first car or 2 were got.

My sympathies go out to the 250+ people who has just been called murderer before any crime has been committed. Some of them have probably saved lives by concentrating on the road rather than on the speedo.

I read yesterday on a camera site, after I posted the question, that if there is another vehicle between the camera operator and the target vehicle, then the operation should be aborted. Hope this happens with me.

Also, on the program last night, he also said that s.yorks camera operators set there cameras at 10% + 4. Hope its the case...although at 33/34, the 10% + 2 rule of thumb should be OK.

This was obviously a road with a bad accident record I assume.

I also assume all of the people driving past at a high speed are aware of that bad accident record?? .. Somehow I think not.

Is there a letter sent out with each NIP stating why that road is so dangerous? I doubt it..

The problem is most people wont even remember when/where they were caught, so do you really think its gonna slow them down?

Don't you think publicising that the road is dangerous would be a good idea!? Prevention surely is better than catching people, 'cos if you catch people then you are failing!

IMHO of course

I hope this is true. I was going up the A5 (dual carriageway) between Muckly Corner and the Shenstone island (Staffs) yesterday just after 5pm and there was a van on the verge. I was in the outside lane and just didn't see him. There was a good gap in front of me, but traffic in both lanes between me and him. He may not even have seen me because of the traffic, of even if he had, may not have had the opportunity to 'shoot' me. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see. I was going pretty fast, which I am not proud of, and will not even try to excuse.

Seens to be that the laser cannot handle cars decelerating. Its a "snapshot" system and if the car is slowing above a certain rate the system errors.
