Insurance if you cant drive
Discussion
Old couple I know the fellow died recently. The insurance company transferred the insurance cover for house and car to his wife for a month while she works out what to do.
They've just hold her she cant continue with the insurance as she doesnt have a driving licence and the car isnt in her name.
Ultimately she wants to sell the car and needs insurance to keep it safely on the drive
Anyone have experience of what to do?

Went through this when my father in law died earlier this year.
Basically the Insurance company were not keen on keeping it insured on ANY basis... which although it was garaged, meant we could not tax it either!
The answer involved transferring Registered Keeper to my brother in law, and insuring it in HIS name.
The rest of the family were then able to drive it when mother in law wanted to go out in it - which she never did!
Sold on ebay eventually for well below what it was worth and cost to insure!

I had this situation once, when my licence was revoked (medical) and my wife was a named driver.
My insurance company made a note of my licence being revoked, but left the car insured so my wife could drive it fully comp.
So from my experience, no need to have a licence yourself, as long as a named person has one

She can insure the car against fire, theft and accidental damage. She doesn't need to hold a driving licence to obtain that cover - Streaky
Any pointers on where to find this cover?Cyberprog said:
Why doesn't she just apply for a provisional license
How you seen how much (some) insurers are charging as a premium for novice drivers? I have recently heard of companies refusing to add provisional licence holders to a parent's policy and insisting that separate cover be taken out ... then wanting some £2,500 for TP, F&T only on a cheap, second-hand, low-powered, small car.
