Ah, isn't this is one of those fines the governement have been ramming down our throats with millions spent on TV adverts and stuff. All this Tax it, SORN it, or face a fine stuff is a pile of crap to keep waste of space bureaucrats in work.

yup!

The letter says I have to pay £40 by the 1th April or it goes up to £80.

So when I ring the "useless" chappie says "erm,....we have extended the time limit to 20th April as we have so much back log to deal with"

Now im thinking, lets just forget it and maybe they will to?

How about an initial letter saying "you have vehicle XXX registered to you. Our records show no current VED or SORN for it. Have you (a) Sold it, (b) forgotten to tax it, (c) forgotten to SORN it or (d) recently taxed/SORNed it? If (b) or (c) you have until XXX to sort it or else there'll be a £40 fine"?

Nah! Far too sensible and not as lucrative.

If I were you I'd pay up if you are genuinely guilty of the offence. I wasn't, fought it, and they quashed it for me...

...because they absolutely will not forget it...

You could just lie and rant about them losing the sorn which you sent to them in good time etc. I would definately give that a go but then I am not trustworthy.

Are you forgetful or what???

Of course you sent hthem a SORN.

As with a NIP, if you have said you have posted it, then thats surely good enough, they can't have it both ways. (Der - its the government, yes they can!)

Anyway, I've had to call the dvla regarding a similiar situation, and they say ok, no problem, must be our fault.

Pretend you are a scamera partnership and try it on!!!

I had exactly the same problem. Spoke to a very nice woman and said that I had sent in the SORN over 6 months earlier which was why I was really supprised that they send me a letter demanding money with menaces.

She told me to fill in the form, just say you filled in the SORN at the local post office, and she said she would mark it that my car was OK and that I would get a reminder in 12 months.

No fine nothing - guess it depends on the type of person you talk to

Agree with the last comment. Tell 'em you did send them the SORN and ask them what the fk they are talking about!

Might be an idea to word it a little differently though

yes, do that.
after my sister crashed her car she reclaimed the tax on it and then it sat in our yard gradually having bits removed from it. We told her to register it scrapped but she's a bit dippy like that and about 4 months later, a fine lands and the doormat. She has no money (student) and insists she sent off the V5 so Mum wrote to them simply saying:

This car has been scrapped, why do you not know this?

Silence for three weeks before She recieved a letter saying "thankyou for informing us you are no longer responsible for this vehicle..."

Last week sis found the V5!!
