Evening all.

I just got flashed straight in the eyes by a speed camera whilst overtaking another car. The camera is at the end of a long straight (or the beginning of the straight from the direction I was coming) and points south to photograph people heading south, whereas I was travelling north at the time.
I know this camera because I drive past it every day but I never thought it would flash me coming the opposite direction to the way it is supposed to work.
I'm a little stumped as to how this will work.. Should I expect a ticket in the mail saying I was doing -50 in a 40 limit?

Does anyone have any experience of this, or maybe knows a bit more about the legal side of it? I've always had a clean licence and would like it to stay as such..

Cheers..

Depends on the type of camera.

this used to be a fun game of mine with a gatso on the way to work from the ex's flat.

used to drive passed it (the wrong way) at atleast 60 in a 30 zone (not condoning speeding but it goes from a 30 to a 60 just after the camera so couldn't see the point in sticking to 30 as your nearly a mile out of town by this point) and was flashed every time. after atleast 30 times being flashed i've had nothing. ever. never drove passed it in the wrong direction but on the right side of the road though. the reason i thought i'd never been ticketed was that i was never passing over markings on the road to indicate distance travelled. but, if your on the side of the road of the camera, you will be driving over the hatchings that prove your speed.... regardless of direction, you were speeding past the camera.... interesting one.

Would health & safety let anyone set up a speed camera that would flash you straight in your eyes? I'm not trying to disregard your post I am genuinely curious..

No, that's not the reason. The Gatso type 24 is not type approved for forward facing detection.
It makes no difference which side of the carriageway you are on.

So - a call to local cops , complaining about a camera that's operating out of type approval . I did at nine in the morning - by nine thirty , I had a call from the Police HQ to say techs support were attending camera . Mention getting in touch with local press ,and bum gets licked rapidly .

Puff the magic..

Yes good call. Everyone that has done this be sure to attend the station and sign a written statement about how many times you drove towards the camera in excess of the speed at which it was set to operate, preferably giving the dates, sign it and wish them a good day.
That will do the trick.

It is not "operating out of type approval" per se. If a NOIP were to be issued, then there would be a defence that the scamera was not HOTA for forward-facing (if that was the case) - Streaky

I'm not going to call the police to report it, i'm sure they have better things to worry about. Unless I get a ticket sent through i'm just going to leave the whole incident alone. If I do recieve a ticket then I will appeal but I don't see the point in wasting my (or anyone elses) time otherwise.

Ask the Home Office - they issued Type Approval for Truvelo in front facing mode, albeit one of the requirements being a magenta coloured filter over the flash unit.

Still very bright though, even in sunny conditions..
