The lack of effectiveness of Speed Camera policy is becoming increasingly obvious and publicised, thanks to the sterling work of Paul and the like.
The next step must be to lobby our local councils to reappraise their approach to road safety. We do after all pay for them with our council tax which includes a proportion going to the local police.
I think this is our best avenue of advancing the cause, because Central Govt are not directly accountable?

You expect Accountability from this lot?, comical..., This is all part of Phoney Tony's Caring-SHARING ethos, Where THEY are never responsible, because of course we all share the responsibility now, don't we?, and it's always our fault. Simple see. So what's the solution, well that's easy, abdicate all responsibility for home affairs to focus groups, lobbyists and pressure groups, while he can get on with his real agenda of putting the world beyond our borders to rights. This people, is modern state-of-the-art socialism where fickle, feckless control freaks who wouldn't last five minutes in the private sector have finally got their hands on the levers, so that they may finally realise their deep rooted quasi-Stalinist agenda, If you think I’m just paranoid that this once sacred land is being turned slowly into a police state, just look around at how many 'private security' companies have sprung up over the last 10 yrs, all those fat Herbert’s in little white 205’s with quasi-paramilitary uniforms, not to mention the legions of town hall foot soldiers busy with their idiot traffic calming schemes and backed up by blank, unblinking traffic wardens who can’t even speak the native tongue. Once again, the politicians take the sweets but leave us the wrappers. It’s election time soon, and don’t let the phoney party machine do a number on you, if you can’t decide which one of the tossers to vote for, then don’t vote at all, at least the grinning git won’t be able to say he has a mandate from the people when he puts the final death knell into this country’s sovereignty by signing away our rights to some nameless, faceless euro-tosser in a windowless office. No my friends, the game has moved on, while we're all busy expecting accountability for their policies, they are busy making sure they are always one-step removed from the process.
Actually the truth isn't slowly coming out, it's been out for a long time (years) in research carried out by the Department of Transport for the Regions in conjunction with six participating Police forces.
It all revolves around establishinng a causal connection for speed as a major contributory factor in any particular accident. This is only so in a minority of cases.
The real causes of accidents have not been addressed but a blanket imposition of restrictions on speeding and the enforcement of speed limits was seen as an easy option to reducing road deaths.
I was actually at a meeting where a senior police officer was spouting about speeding, and when I challenged his vague and unsubstantiated figures with reference to established factual research he shut up and would not discuss the matter with me. What was apparent however was that he was well aware of the research to which I referred but chose to ignore it as it did not suit his argument.
