Im quite new to the forums and hope someone can help answer a quick question for me. I was tavelling to Silverstone Race Track last weekend on the A43 70mph limit and driving within this. Approaching the top of a hill (Duel CW) on a tight bend was a forward facing Truvelo Camera, obviously my radar detector didn't pick it up! Saw a few people flying passed me and this thing was really well hidden so if it was live must have lined Gordon Brown's pockets How exactly do this cameras work? what limit do you think they would have been set to in a 70mph limit? I fully support cameras in 30 and 40 zones and accident blackspots but this was just a money making scheme IMO... Somone must have thought lets make some easy money off of people travelling to the race track, easy targets... Located on the top of a hill on a bend and well hidden also these cameras seem smaller then normal Gatsos..

I can't tell you exactly how they work but it may be a magnetic loop under the road surface that having crossed at two points starts and stops a clock activating the camera if you are in excess of the limit set for it. I may be completely wrong but the old truvelo method was based on a similar system with cables stretched across the road 1 meter apart and the device sited in a car/van parked close to the cables which were all attached to each other.

Different forces set their target speeds at diferent levels. You say 70 limit so it must be a dual carriageway as I do not know the road.
If that is the case and it was sited in my force area I would expect that the trigger would have been around 81mph-83mph.

this thing was really well hidden

Nasty place to put truvelo's. I know the camera though and there are warning signs on the approach - There's two going the other way!

A nasty place at the moment is the thread 'dodgy...'
Have a look Mungo.

Those ones are hardly hidden you can see em from half a mile way if your looking!

Anyway they work on an inductive loop, if senses you are over a set speed it takes two pictures over a very short distance about 20cm there are little white lines in front of it. Time over distance = speed

It has an infred lens so you normally wont see the flash.

Have a look here:

www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/frames.htm

Roll down the index on the left of the page until you reach Speedtraps. Truvelo/DS2 is listed and described there.

That's the best news i've heard in a long time... *cough* although i condone any such criminal action and would like to warn those who are doing this...

You will be caught, well so long as you were speeding
