On the A428 between Bedford and Northampton, these strange blue gantry things have appeared, like slightly ornate lamp posts but with longer arms... they come in pairs and the arms aren't that far short of meeting in the middle; the arm on one side of the road is longer than on the other side. On the ends of the arms are some kind of gadget - a sort of little cylindrical lump, too small to see any detail, with a tail hanging off it, a piece of wire a few inches long (antenna?)

Anyone have any idea what they are?

They've been there ages, they are the timing cameras. Time you from one point to another, if you get there quicker than the normal limit would allow, you get done for speeding.

Not knowing the road I've had a look on Multimap - seems like a straight road.

Are they in the 60 limit for revenue earning or in the little villages I see dotted around?

Or - let me guess. They've placed elongated 40/50 limits outside the villages and are keen to catch people who don't know the road...

Are they at the Northampton end, the Bedford end or somewhere in the middle?

If it's at the Northampton end then it's only to be expected - they love their little SPECS cameras

They are between Yardley hastings and Brafield I think, in Northamptonshire.

It is a fast road, but is an accident nightmare.

The new gantries are in the NSL sections and the villages have had the "slow down" flashing lights installed. Only one camera I now of in the villages and that is at the bottom of a steep hill as you enter Yardley Hastings.

I will going that way in half an hour so will check on the progress.

The main problem with the road is it is fast. And you'll get someone waiting to turn right and say hello to carnage central.

FourWheelDrift, Bee Jay: thanks, now I know... I haven't been along that road for ages, so they were new to me!

puggit: It's not as straight as all that - multimap gives a false impression. The gantries are in NSL stretches, but placed not far away from restricted sections through villages.

Teppic: mostly at Northampton end. Any chance you could get us some pyramids to confuse their timing function?

Liszt: one of the larger villages (I think it's Turvey, but I can never remember the names) has two conventional speed cameras, one at either end. Bright yellow, so you can't miss them.

Should see the Monstrosities on the southern approaces to Leeds. These are supposed to be for congestion charging "research". Strange thing is one set is on Belle Isle Road quite far out from the Centre, so where they intend to start the charging is beyond Me. Unless it is to do with the Super tram route. You can see one of them on the M621 Coming from the M1 into Leeds.
