I was stopped for speeding about half a mile from north bound junction 10 of the M1. The police say I was doing more than twice the speed limit but the 50 MPH variable limit does not come in to force until after junction 10. Where can I get documented evidence to prove this.

its a bit semantic isn't it - if you were doing twice the 50 limit you were >100 anyway and should expect the appropriate consequences.

I mean the variable speed limit road signes and not the gantry notices.

I was speeding and will face the penalty but there is a huge difference between facing a Magistrate for being over twice the limit (automatic Ban) and the points received through the fixed penalty system for being 30 MPH over the speed Limit.

As a speed limit it will need a Traffic Regulation Order, even for roadworks.

M.1. (J 10 near Luton) is the responsibility of D of Tran but will have Beford Co Council acting as their agents I believe.

Used to be, now large lengths are 50mph, indicated by a few cones and nothing else.

It appears that the OP is confused about the difference between temporary speed limits with fixed speeds as displayed on boards at the roadside and variable limits displayed on overhead gantry signs (and possibly advisory limits displayed on matrix boards in the central reservation).

I'm not surprised he was confused as to whether 100mph was an acceptable speed.
