I want to tax my car. Unfortunately I have misplaced my certificate of insurance, which I only discovered in the post office on Tuesday. I am waiting for a fresh certificate to arrive and the car just sits in the garage.

What's the crack with the new automatic fine mularkey?

I don't want to get fined for no car tax when the thing is just sat in the garage.

It's road tax FFS and the car isn't on the road!

[pendantmode]It's "vehicle excise duty" not car tax.[/pendantmode]

But I might have the insurance certificate by tomorrow. As soon as I get it, it will be taxed. I just don't want the btards getting any more of my hard earned than is necessary.

From what I understand it's mostly hot air - the system is in chaos.

But don't blame me if you DO get a fine

How you stand TO- condensed:

Road Fund Licence (RFL) expired 30.4.04.
Cannot renew because of misplaced Ins cert.
Use on road 1.5.04 onward - technically Use without RFL and Fail to display FFL.
But DVLA allow (unofficially) a period of grace of 14 days in which to renew.
But if stopped you could still be reported. BiB sends special form to DVLA about no Tax and providing one is taken out in continuation it is most unlikely that DVLA will pursue the matter.
Different if LA Warden sees you as most likely will give FPN for failing to display.

R.F.L. expired/on SORN months before 4.04 then not so clear and use best left to when Licence obtained.

If no RFL is to be taken out in the month - then SORN forthwith.

RFL expired 30.4.04. No Licence taken out. No SORN. On days after 1.6.04 DVLC will do a cull of records, RFL not in force or SORN notification - AUTOMATIC &80 fine irrespecive whether you have used the vehicle or not.

Thanks for that DVD. It's a second car, so no hardship to leave it in the garage for a couple of days. Got a bike for if the sun comes out

Knowing how greedy "they" are these days I wanted to know what the grace period was.

I have read in the past that there is no grace period; you can still be nicked during the 14 days, as DWVD says.

On the system being in chaos, I sold a car recently and received an acknowledgement of receipt of the change of owner form within a week.

"Keep this in a safe place in case the police need to see it", was the warning.

You have to renew the tax disc within 1 month of the old one expiring. They didn't make this clear on the original leaflet explaining the new rules, but they have since updated it, stating the above.
