Hi, wondering if anyone has been in my current position and can help? I passed my test in Sept 2002 and was unaware of the 2 yr "probation period" where i loss my licence if i get over 6 points, and have to re do theory and practical tests. I have moved to wales from surrey with my husband and parents none of whom drive. I do all the driving and my mileage is over 2,000 miles per month. We are so remote the nearest corner shop is 2 miles away and i take an hour to get to my job. Well i got 2 speeding tickets in the last 6 months and although i've now sent a letter with my licence explaining this all I want to know if anyone has managed to get out of this situation with their licence? do the police ever take pity? I've found out there is no way to go to court, and that it's a straight withdrawal from dvla. pls help!!

I think you're looking at bad nes I'm afraid. Unless you use public transport or get a lift to work, it is time to either change job, move next door to your current place of work or take some holiday/unpaid leave until you get your licence back.

Edited to say, take a look at Dwight VanDriver's posts on this thread:

Meant quite on purpose, I'm afraid. Too much time on my hands

Im going to play the harsh person here.

If you were unaware of the licence revoking laws then how many other traffic laws dont you know?

Perhaps you should have adhered to speed limits and left a little more time for your journey if it was that great a risk for you.

You said "over 6 points", surely if you had 2 speeding tickets that would give you exactly 6 points, so shouldn't you be ok unless you get another?

Nope having gone through this ages ago its 6 points and your out. Which I got all at once after a high speed blat in my T8

What I did was apply for a theory and practical test when I knew I'd been had and got the summons through, and sent an application for a new provisional in ASAP after court. Ended up off the road for 3 weeks rather than 6 months or however long it takes these days for the :censord: to send a new provisional, book theory, book practical etc. etc.

At the time I was 18, doing 1000's of miles a month had a fair few hours track time logged etc. etc. was quite annoyed at it, even more so when I found that even after jumping through all their hoops the six points where still on there, this was after the DVLA had told me several times "you start again from scratch".

Isn't it the same as for regular points, i.e. they stay on the license for 4 years but are only valid for 3?

I am all Welsh and I agree exept that I would extend it to "leave the UK and Europe".

I have never known a time when we have had such a bunch of fools and knaves in positions of power.

I tested out the 2 year probation thingy a few years ago. As Matt T-16 says, you only need to be off the road for a few weeks if you are quick to apply for your new license and tests.

I got the letter from the DVLA saying, "You're not allowed to drive from such-a-date" which was before they sent me the letter, so thanks to them I was unknowingly driving without a licence for 2 or 3 weeks.

When you get your licence back it won't be clean, but interestingly it still lists the date when you first passed your test, so you say you've held a licence since then.

I'm the only person I know who's passed 2 driving tests first time If only my old 309 1.3GL didn't go down hills so fast...

As an update on this, the woman in question got a new provisional licence sorted, passed the theory test, and failed her driving test within a couple of weeks of losing her licence. Apparently (according to my friend) she's a liability on the road, and he's just realised that she's been taking him for a ride as he was driving her around on his days off, and she was pulling sickies/"working from home" the rest of the time. She's now looking for other employment.
