comunity speed camera ? can they fine you?

drove into a local village today and saw some signs up saying comunity speed checks , so made sure i was within the limit , bit further along i see 3 older men (70ish) in high vis coats pointing something at the cars
just wondered what the score is really , is it a real speed gun ? what can they do if they catch you over the limit
just what we need all the local interfering busy bodies grassing everyone up

The problem is the people that sign up to do this are very anti car, and very jealous.
Of course don't bother pointing it at Mrs ------ in her micra she would never speed, and we play bridge with her on Wednesdays.

They are usually doing a speed advisory report or whatever it's called. Basically there is a potential issue and before the local council will do anything about it they need to gather some info, ie, how many people, how often, what speeds! I would rather they did this then let and potential problem go on. Got nothing to hide don't let it worry you.

But the state transition is not instantaneous. So it could mean half-way through the process of going from live to dead. On the basis that the average life expectancy is what, 70 something?, and by applying the same logic, I'm actually over half way.Streaky
And yes this subject comes up nearly as often as insurance and tax on the way to an MoT. Puff'll be along soon.

Er, not everyone who does this is anti-car.. I'm part of the Community Speedwatch scheme in our village. We have problems with speeding cars & motorbikes, especially near the school & playing field. In an ideal world, we'd have real police enforcing the limits.. however our local police force consists of about 3 police and 4 PCSOs. This is to cover 10 rural villages!
The police round here like the scheme - it has provided some useful information about the traffic patterns in the area. As a direct result of information captured by the scheme, they prosecuted a local taxi driver who was seen regularly travelling well in excess of the limit while driving a minibus full of kids.
Before Saaby jumps in, these 30 limits are appropriate for the area - limited footpaths, plenty of pedestrians about, etc.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the point?If the police have the resources to run a speed trap themselves, why do they need the community?
