Observations from the A1 / A1M southbound, a few miles north of Wetherby on Friday 7 May at about 11.30 a.m.

I was travelling back from Newcastle to Wetherby, making good progress - as you do when nobody is looking - when we all had to reduce speed right down to about 35 mph for a few minutes. In front of us were about 3 or 4 fully marked Traffic Cars with blue lights flashing, effectively forming a rolling road block (is that what they call it?) and preventing us from overtaking them.

We continued like this for a few minutes then suddenly a grey(ish) Peugeot 406 whizzed past us down the hard shoulder at a cracking pace followed closely by another Traffic Car.

At first I thought it was a pursuit in progress, but the other Traffic Cars did not attempt to block the road, so I guess it could have been a police driver training exercise.

Pretty soon after the two on the hard shoulder had zoomed off into the distance, the other police cars also accelerated away and left the rest of us to resume business as usual.

Does anybody know what was really going on?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Doubt if a rolling block was done for a training exercise, more like needing to get someone somewhere very quickly.

There would be no gain in zooming down the completely clear motorway for training..

Sounds like a pursuit to me - the rolling road block creates an empty "safe" zone in front. The chased car is followed into this space and then dealt with when no-one else is around.

Possibly if Tpac training, but not in normal pursuit training.

It's a lady actually - Ms. Della Cannings.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
