Brake on the radio again!!!!
Discussion
That Mary woman has just been on BBC Radio1 news telling everyone that speeding kills, and how Brake's latest plan to show video footage of people who have lost family members and get paramedics to describe crash scenes will help reduce speeding by young men who are pushing their new found freedom and cars to the limit

MR FISH
No they did not say last week that the plan was to take the kids to the morgue.
This is what they said and I quote from the letter sent to Andy Payne or volvod5 dude who posted it on PH.
“I would just like to confirm that Brake has not had anything to do with this initiative other than discussing it on the radio today. As far as I am aware it is a local police initiative”.
Some people here spin and spin and spin
Surly this video is what we all call for its education. Praise were praise is due.

Obviously you are very pro scamera, maybe a "friend of brake" I am sure all the videos that they show will be all caused by speeding and nothing else, no drink driving, bad driving, bad awareness etc.
speed kills rant rant rant

It looks to me like BRAKE are twisting things again just slightly but enough to make a significant difference.

I heard it on the R1 news too.
There are two solutions to young men "pushing their new found freedom and driving skills to the limit" (I think it was)
1) Shock them into realising that if they
up they'll end up like the people in the video or
2) Teach them how to drive more competently and more responsibly.
Anyone who is a parent will know that 1) is doomed to failure as kids think that they know better and that they're indestructible.
When my son starts driving I'll be going down the second route and getting him onto advanced driver training, skid pan, car control, etc. as soon as he's passed his test, if not sooner.
Hopefully this will both stop him getting into an accident situation and also give him the skills to get out of one if he is stupid enough to get into one.
Showing him a few minutes of macabre video tape would achieve nothing.
What a pity BRAKE don't seem to realise this.

Re-read what you all have written – god some of you have big chips on your shoulders. And yes DUSTY, I have quoted the original e-mail correctly it was sent to many people in ABD membership and yahoo sites and the press – how the wording has changed on PH I leave you to think about.
COUNT DUCKULA said “Obviously you are very pro scamera, maybe a "friend of brake" I am sure all the videos that they show will be all caused by speeding and nothing else, no drink driving, bad driving, bad awareness etc.” Sorry do you know me? I think not! Do not insult me. I am no friend of Brake. I am a biker who is sick to his skin of having his mates killed or killing themselves. If an initiative works I like it if it does not I am against it, and I can make up my own mind thank you very much.
I agree PSIMPSON7 “They don’t need to teach people not to speed as such, they need to teach them to drive carefully and responsibly within their, and their cars limits.” Have you seen the DVD? No? Neither have I but I have asked a friend who was at the press launch and she said it was very good and about lots of aspects of driving including COUNT DUCKULA drink driving, bad driving, bad awareness, not putting a sent belt on, concentration etc.

I caught this, and I realised what the real problem with Brake is: they sound very reasonable and convincing. We know that the statistics they base their argument on are flawed at best (And plainly bollox at worst
) but on the face of it it seems reasonable. Especially when the politicians can believe they're making a difference which pays for itself and doesn't require extra taxation.
Unfortunately, our more outspoken advocates (and that nice Captain Gatso
) sound like a bunch of child eating, Deathrace 2000 fans rather than people with a valid contribution to the road safety debate.
And the real solution? Well, I'm off to give those nice people at the ABD and Safespeed some of my money.

Personally, I cant for one minute see how this has even the slimmest of slimcia chances of working.
Show a gory video to a 17 year old yoof and he will, in the vast majority of cases say 'cool!'
We had the police at school when I was 11, whilst doing cycling proficiency. A policemen told a story that ended up with him saying 'and we had to pick him up with a shovel' (thinking about it perhaps not the best subject matter for 11 year olds). Did it make us ride our bicycles in a safer manner? Did it bollocks. Dukes of Hazzard was on the telly and all we wanted to do were jumps (and Daisy Duke) be they in the road or not.
Education, education, education. Its the only thing that is ABSOLUTELY proven to reduce the incidence of road accidents.
Alas thats a fact that seems to be lost on the majority of road safety campaigners...

I am glad that the main causes of accident are covered, all I hear was the radio this morning, all they mentioned was speeding.

Motorbiker, No i havent seen the video. I hope they do cover more than just speeding though, as there are so many other causes of accidents that must be just as likely to appeal to new driver.....
Drink/drugs, showing off, poor judgement etc etc.
I must admit I am not sure that the video will achieve a great deal, although hopefully it may.
I wonder if the BBC arent helping this because every time I have heard it mentioned on R1 they have only mentioned it targeting speeding........
(edited to add 'appeal' was probably the wrong choice of word)

Chill people....it tuesday, and I dont want to hear it all again.
Some of us dont like Brakes message.....I think we established that. No need to open a new forum each time shes on the radio. If it really bothers you that much get involved with a group to spread the message you want, or create one, and get that in the press. Stop sitting around moaning.
Now i'd like to see safespeed and Mary go head to head on the 6 o'clock news. How do we set that up?

Do educational films shown in schools have to conform to BBFC guidlines? If so what rating is this thing going to get a 15 or possibly a 12. They think that is going to stop teenagers speeding when they get a car. Every pack of cigarettes has SMOKING KILLS in big letters on it - people still smoke.
They are barking up the wrong tree with this one

I agree with this statement this DVD is for people of driving age or close (not 11), it is to be combined with education at schools and youth centers the teenagers are not just shown the DVD it is part of a series of lesson – my mate who has seen it said that she wants a copy to show her teenager daughter. It is part of a program of education and if it works I will for one be very thankful – who here on PH can say that they are trying to help others, I am sick of people criticizing others who are try – I might not like all that they do or cameras etc. but they are trying, I think we should praise the things that work and constructively help to alter the things that do not.
And before you all start saying that I love cameras etc. I am a biker, I own 4, I have been to the TT 7 times in the last 15 years. I have been over 180mh on the Island. I have been to 9 funerals of bikers mates, 2 kid funerals both close relatives.

If BRAKE support the 'morgue' initiative, give it air time by discussing it with the media, and generally give it backing then it is irrelevent if it is they created the idea or not. Associateion by support infers responsibility on to them.
BRAKE have to accept some of the responsibility for the backlash and ridicule that is bound to emerge from 'right-minded' thinking people that see this initiative as extreme, over the top and knee-jerk.

Ok, I got my wires crossed.
Still don't agree with showing the video though.
I have posted this before and I will post it again!
I am ex-Brake member
! I had nasty no-fault accident some years ago. It had nothing to do with speeding - but everything to do with someone taken ill behind the steering wheel.
They wanted me to go public with pictures of my injuries and pictures of me in wheelchair as part of their campaign that "Speed Kills and Injures". It was not so, and would have been false claim - and we objected strongly. This is level they stoop to to further their cause and argument.
We ceased being Friend of Brake over this - and over the speed cam issue as we do not believe for one moment that speed cameras do that much to "save lives"! Police presence, proper driver, cyclist and pedestrian education without crass sensationalism, and an intelligent use of cameras create better and safer road conditions!
As for videos of victims' families and paramedics giving graphic accounts - this has been done before! Jimmy Saville's old clunk-click ads contained some footages of faces which had met windscreens - as I recall from visits here as child! Did it work? You still had problems getting people to belt up! People always used seatbelts prior to law passed in 1982? Do some wear them all the time? Seen plenty without them as I'm driving around! Even see pretzles in Pandas using hand held mobiles along with the rest of the twazak brigade! What about the Drink Drive adverts? Some of those were graphic! Current "Smoking Campaign" one! Stopping the kids from lighting up? Really! I have just mauled and clawed my 14 year old for this! Turned into nasty vicious wild draconian Mama over it!
I used to get lectures at school about accidents on piste as well as on road. Did it stop us from "perfecting our slalom techniques" NOPE! Were we shocked by graphic account of some A/route accident somewhere near Lugano in which someone lost his head? NOPE! Some of us were actually amused as it sounded really gory!
Kids think they are indestructable and will not really see sick videos as applying to them personally. Some are hardened to those nasty special effect movies and computer games anyway!
Encouragement and real incentives to go for advanced training etc - far better.
Germany's current DVD introduced last month in Greeeny Pfalz is on correct lines. The offending driver is given DVD - which shows actual footage of him in his own car committing the offence. (This is tken from the CCTV footage along the A/bahn.) The DVD has been doctored with a variety of plausible "what ifs" and the "criminal"
can adjust the speed and find out possible outcomes which involve himself and possibly whatever he collides with. He will also see graphically injuries he and others could receive. Surely more personal, better home truth delivery, and more logical than intruding upon other people's tragedies! That does sound like it addresses the dangers to me anyway! More so than this little caper!
