No Front Numberplate

Going to pick up a car tomorrow, and the current owner has the numberplate in the window. There is no mount on the front bumper so i was wondering what would be the most id get done with by the police if im stopped and i explain that ive just bought it and will fix it when i get it home.

I think the max is a £60 fine & no points.
If You do get stopped, point out to BiB you pay their wages, feel free to ask why they're not doing their job & catching proper criminals!

I'm sure if you leave it displayed in the window and explain to a policeman that you've just bought it, you should be fine.

I know a few people that don't run front number plates, either fell off or you've just had a front end repair/bump.

Their daily commute wouldn't happen to be along a motorway full of SPECS cameras would it? Those expansion joints on the M1 near Luton can easily make your front number plate fall off.

As I understand it, it can be dealt with by a magistrates who can fine you much more but it is still not endorsable. A fixed penalty is a means of disposal without it going to court. I cannot speak for the police but anecdotal evidence suggests if you pass the attitude test you will get away with a warning, but it will be logged and you will not get away with it if you are pulled again.

I used to have no front number plate on my MK3 Golf quite often and never got any bother from the police.

Just take some adhesive pads, then you can put the numberplate on the car..

Make sure you've got insurance documents with you. I wouldn't be concerned about the numberplate as such, but it makes you more likely to be stopped. Which means they'll be checking that you've got insurance.

But yes, £60 non endorsable ticket is the worst case you're likely to come across. Magistrates can impose greater fines but whose going to bother doing a process book/file for a numberplate showing in a window?

Would not the same rules apply as when the characters are mis-spaced, post-'73 black background, italic font, etc?
That is, the first offence can incur only a moderate fine, but repeated offences can ramp up the penalty?

I know someone that runs no front plate, has been stopped on a multiple occasions (including by the same officer 6 months apart), and always a verbal telling off.


ETA* Tell a lie, they once got one of those Vehicle Rectification Notice things, which required them to get an MOT station to stamp a bit of paper.

The only requirement for a front number plate is that it's visible. There's nothing in law that states it must be attached to the front of the vehicle etc, as long as it's visible that's all that matters.
