Parking tickets in EU, do we have to pay?

I got one in OZ, because no-one told me you can only park in one direction on the road?. If the cars are parked downwards you cannot park facing upwards.
They all have to be parked the same way, got back to the U/K a week later got my fine.
The fine goes up and its pass on to the courts ?.

Depends on the country. Got a load of tickets in Copenhagen before Christmas, worked out cheaper to get tickets than to pay for a days parking. Have not recevied any fines as yet.
From what I read, some countries are using debt collection agencies in the UK to collect the fines. I was going to pay the fines in Denmark, like I said it was cheaper than paying to park, but I could only pay fines online with a Danish bank account, which I don't have. Looks like the parking worked out even cheaper in the end.

The biggest potential pitfalls are likely to be:
You actually get clamped and escorted to a bank machine where they'll lighten your account for however much they see fit.
The car is impounded as it keeps appearing on their records - again, big release fee and possible confiscation of licence etc (again depending on country and mood of the policeman)
Should you also be stopped for something else: Speeding / Routine Check / etc it will not count in your favour to have a whole list of unpaid parking offences against the registration.
PS - Do NOT jump red lights in Holland / Belgium... It is frowned upon with a Mansell like brow!!!

You might get a nice letter from a company called Euro Parking Collection (http://www.epcplc.com/) who will threaten loads of baloney and try to persuade you to part with a load of cash for the fine plus a load more for their own administration fees. All of this you can ignore. Do not respond to them in anyway as once you reply they will pursue it and drive you nuts.
