Or just buy the right fare in the first place
Here we go (again!) - another knobber who can't read or reads and fails to understand perfectly good english.

MODS - I think this thread has more than served its purpose and there has been a full debate of the issues including much side tracking - can you lock the thread now please?

Some of us see deliberate and obvious fare dodgers on a regular occasion during our commute.
These people are having to be subsidised by honest people who do pay for the correct ticket.

It's your daughter, who made the mistake in not reading the rules and got caught, with the wrong age ticket as a result I understand that.

But, her inability to read those rules, that lots of people had no trouble with, should not result in an open season for fare dodging.

The comments and associated sentiment expressed on this thread, should make that perfectly clear.

I hope your MP reads this thread to get the balanced view.

Sorry didn't notice your reply until today.

In my view there needs to be a law to deal with fare dodgers and not with innocent mistakes. The law could stand but make it that it can be fought in court and not a fait accompli as it currently stands - read the thread if you don't understand how unfair things are at the moment. Also would like it that a Private Company should not be able to bring about CRIMINAL convictions i.e it would need to go via CPS (though they'd need to open a whole new office just to deal with the cases that TIL bring forward).

Please pester your MP's and ask them to liaise with Jonathan Evans MP for Cardiff North
As a matter of interest how do the train companies tell the difference between fare dodgers and innocent mistakes? After all everyone caught claims it is an innocent mistake.

Of course in reality they tell the difference by taking details threatening everyone with prosecution. They will then review each case and drop some immediately, others they will accept an offer to settle and others they will take all the way. The ones dropped will be those where it is a first time error which they will know because that person has no record with them. Those that end up in court will invariably have previous journeys without tickets.
