Not strictly Corvette but as plenty of pistonheaders have experience with converting £ to $ for holidays, etc does anyone recommend a good place to exchange?

Currently MSN money shows about $1.95 to a £ but my poxy bank want to give around 1.85. No wonder the b*stards don't charge commission.

See you at the Fairmile

If you are going to exchange serious amounts of wedge i.e. enough to buy a vette then you should get the "commercial rate" from your bank. certainly Nat West have always done this for me when purchasing a car in the US.

If its just small amounts of holiday cash I change about £50 worth at the UK airport as a way of killing time - and the comission is probably less than the price of a drink or a sandwich ! Then I find the nearest automated teller machine at the destination and put my debit card in there and extract up to my limit. Replenish your wallet from another ATM as it empties. This gets a better rate than in the UK and means you aren't having to guard a large wad all the time.

OI ! No comments about the size of my wad if you please !!

Oh and what time at the Fairmile tonight ?

For small amounts try a post office. I had to change up $50 a while ago & the exchange rate was pdg plus there's no commission at all.

dont get pulled in with this no commission crap . they all charge commission on the spread of the transaction the difference between the buy and the sell. Also there off price will be way off the commercial rate. the $ is at 1.94 institutional rate, so you should get around that price. www.mataf.net/en/forex-gbpusd.htm
If your changing large amounts Charles Schwab do very good rates if you open an account.
Or you could open up a Forex dealing account, which is a really good way to swap money about.
Also maybe try : https://www.xe.com/fx/
not sure about their rates though .

I've tried xe trade recently and they're extremely helpful, though the setup process is a little tortuous. I believe I got a decent rate and the main charge was for the wire transfer from my bank (£20, I think).

Based on their service I'd recommend them, but they were recommended to me so I didn't do too much research to see if they gave the best rate. They do have a demo system which lets you do a fake transfer before setting up an account so that you can see how much you're getting.
