Hi,
I noticed yesterday that one of my mufflers is loose at the rear hanger. It has vertical movement, no horizontal movement. The two screws retaining the hanger are tight. I have not taken the hanger apart yet and the Workshop manual although stretching to 3 volumes is not very detailed on this item - oh for an AIM. Was there a rubber insert in the hanger aperture than has fallen away? Could I try to fabricate a thin sliver of rubber to stick in there to tighten it up? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I should now add that I have the Borla Stinger replacements but these were fitted last Summer and there has been no problem until now and I clean them every week so I know this has only just occurred.
I will probably try swapping the hangers over this weekend to see if that does anything. It probably will not but it is a good excuse for taking them out just to see what is what.

Should definitely have a rubber insert.

While you are messing with the mufflers I would recommend you check the weld on the origional GM pipe to the origional flange (this is the flange that bolts to the 'new' Borla pipe (before it goes over the axel, obviously looking front to back from underneath the car).

This weld is not the best in the world & is a known weak spot.

I have had a Borla stinger on my C5 for over two years now & have had to have both flanges re-welded. When the flange weld goes the muffler & chrome tip will drop considerably.

Have fun....................

No Nigel, remodelling the library, tea at Richard's cafe and playing with my new digital SLR has eaten the 4 days, can't believe it. The '73 brakes have the priority this coming weekend but I'll update you on what I find as soon as I get under the C5. Regards, Pete
