hi guys am going to look round a few c5's in the next few months and just want to know a few things which might be able to help me.

1. is there much difference between us spec and euro spec cars?

2. how wide is the c5? just wondering as my parking space is 8ft wide and want it to be able to fit. [should do cant imagine any car being 8ft wide]

3. what is a-pack and b-pack?

4. is there a certain year to go for or avoid? and were there many mods put on later cars over ealier ones, eg hud?

5. i have around 19-20k to spend, what sort of c5 will that get me?

sorry for all the stupid questions and i know prop answerd a million times but would be very gratgul for any replies.

Dear Speedfreak,

You might want to check out the club website www.corvetteclub.org.uk for details as to the answers for some of your questions as there is a Technical Forum.

The car is 6ft something wide including door mirrors from memory.
The HUD was available from 1999 onwards.

Very brief history.
1997 there was the Coupe
1998 Coupe and Convertible
1999 Coupe, Convertible and Hardtop
ditto 2000
2001 Coupe, Conv and hardtop becomes Z06 with 385BHP
2002-2004 Coupe, Conv and Z06 with 405 BHP

Yellow colour available from 2000 onwards hence colour is called Millenium Yellow.
Chrome wheels only available from 2000 onwards.
Various styles of wheels supplied as standard for different years.

For a complete sado list of options you want to buy a copy of the Corvette Black Book which is available from Amazon etc. for about £15. this lists all of the RPOs (Regular Production Options) for each year including colour schemes etc.

Where abouts are you? Local owners I'm sure would be pleased to help, or even sell you their car !!!

In european cars the a-pack effectively was the base set of options and the major parts of the b-pack meant adding the split sided climate control and whizzier seats. Try to get a car with a HUD if you can as its a really useful addition.

I've found that the size of the C5 is about the same as a Volvo 850 - but it has a helluva lot more presence !

Some of the '01 models had excessive oil consumption due to a dodgy batch of piston rings. These should have been replaced under warranty if needed but its worth checking.

Bol**cks - I think I have one of those! Its chewing the oil at the moment (like one quart every 6 weeks or so). And the warranty is run out now! Darn it.

1998 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C5 auto
dual zone climate control, Red/Neutral hide, only 8k £19995.
AMERICAN CARRIAGE COMPANY
Tel: 0208 5493151

Does this tick all the boxes? It's on Autotrader at the moment. I would offer no more than £18,000 for it.

20K is a weird sum for a vette - you tend to get the older ones for that.. Usually around 24-26 you get a much newer one and maybe in warranty if you are lucky. They start to bottom out about 18k so the age seems to be a big factor then...

I used Autotrader and went to a few dealers in London - ACI, and American Carrige, then called a guy called Chris Graham - really helpful. Eventually bought from AtlanticSportsCars..... Next time i will probably buy private as most vette owners look after the car well - but for first time for peace of mind a dealer is probably a good idea. Good luck there are loads on Autotrader at the moment!

went down to acc in london last night as its on my way home from work, they have 2 c5's there, the red one as mentioned above, but the sticker price is £21995, so they must have droped the price down already, and they have a really nice black c5, 2003 50th av edition, 6000 miles chorme wheels which i really like now, but sticker price £27995!!

must admit i do prefer the chome wheels and the hud i think would be cool, so maybe i can strech my finances to get a 2000+ model. the red c5 thre looked dull compared to the black 03 c5.

SF - Given the last few posts on this thread and assuming you're serious, Mark's car looks like it's pegged at an excellent price for what you're looking for.
Disclaimer: BTW and for the record, I have no commercial interest in this, nor do I personally know Mark.

If you really want a red one, have you seen this in the classifieds? www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/detail.asp?i=42065&s=40
Is it anyone from this forum?

hi guys, still looking for a c5, but have to wait til july before i can afford the spec i want. one more question though, on some c5's i have seen there is an extra bit of body work going across the middle of the doors, like a small strip going acoss the side, some have it some dont, and it does not seem to be on certain years i have seem 98 ones with it and 2002 ones with it and also both years without. so can anyone tell me what this is why do some have it and some dont?

It's just a body side moulding. It comes as an option and is (allegedly) easily removable if you don't like it. Alternatively, you can buy them and stick them on.

Basically, it's a bit of trim that makes the car look sportier (in my opinion)

You may be able to fit the later valley cover plate, that is of you don't already have it.

The US spec models have the FE1 suspension as stock. There is an optional FE3 suspension which is adjustable but a recent US test suggested it's not overly effective (I think it's referred to as magnetic ride or handling)and concluded that the optional Z51 suspension was the preferred choice. FE4 suspension was Z06 only.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most European cars come with better Z51 suspension which is the sports set-up in Corvette-speak. They also tend to come better specified. However, the Euro versions also come with the big fog lights in the rear bumper and reversing lights in the rear clusters rather than next to the rear plate.

20k will buy a 98-99 model. The later cars are better if you can stretch to one as they had different intakes and various improvements if you plan on modifying the air intake.

If you imported one, you would probably get a better and later one. If you don't mind a fixed roof, one of the better Corvettes was the 1999/2000 hardtop as this came as standard with a 6 speed gearbox and Z51 suspension plus it looks like the Z06 which adopted the bodystyle as Z06-only from 2001. However, they didn't offer this car in Europe although I've seen at least two in the UK.

For the suspension option, look inside the door jamb or glovebox and look for the square panel which lists all the car's options in alphabetical order. In there, you should find LS1 for the engine, for example but you'll also see what FE suspension is on it and if it has the Z51 package.

MInd you, if you want the same engine, a little extra weight and 2 extra seats, there's a 2001 Camaro Z28 on Find It for £12k. Think what modifications that £8k would buy.

I'm thinking but I reckon it would a take bit more to modify it into a Vette
