Hi, new member here, hope you can help!

I need new tyres for my C5, and am not sure if I should get run flats again.

Would there be anything wrong with putting standard tyres on it?

What effect would this have on the sensors?

Is it possible to fit standard / run flats myself?

Does anyone know a good mail order supplier / fitter in Glasgow area?

Thanks in advance!
Gary

A well-worn topic!! Have a look at www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=169526&f=100&h=0

Hopefully this will answer some of your queries, and theres a link to another previous set of posts too, so it should be of interest!

Fit real tyres instead of the runflats, you'll be glad you did ! Quieter, smoother riding, significantly less tramlining, grippier dry and wet...

I bought a set of yokohamas from mytyres.com. great tyres at great price, but you gotta get em fitted yourself, and quite a few places won't do it now.

Thanks very much guys - glad I came on this forum!

Has anyone actually tried fitting tyres themselves, ie. not a garage?

Hi
I got so stressed about this it’s a nightmare, without the proper equipment you will damage the rims trying to fit tyres your self, you need a good garage with a decent new machine and find one that wont mind fitting the tyres if you supply them your self. And also tell them if you are planning on buying run flats as they might refuse to fit them or not take liability for fitting them (ps Surbiton Tyres are tozzers)

The Best place to by tyres is from NorthHants Tyres. (they do mail order)
www.northhantstyres.co.uk/ ask for John 01252 613 261

personally I went for the goodyears to keep my car stock and also because of the speed rating and the safety aspect of surviving a high speed blow out.

Ps did I mention that Surbiton Tyres are Tozzers, and not to go there unless you like being butt futted.

Contrary to popular belief - Kwik Fit are very able at fitting Runflats and took very good care over mine. You are always better off sourcing the tyre yourself and getting someone competent to fit them.

I've know one or two people that have had tyre machines in their garage, but in truth it isn't really worthwhile, particularly since you'll need them balanced too. Also a number of 'standard' tyre machines don't quite handle the width of wheels generally found on Vettes.

In terms of companies that will fit tyres you take them, I've found most will, particularly independent tyre people, but some of the mainstream fitters can be a bit funny. Check price before they do it too! Sometimes it's not cheap!

Depends on your mileage; the Jap stuff can be good and cheap but cheap means fast wwear although I cannot speak for the Yokomos. After much research I went for the Michelin Sports but I do 15K a year. Probably a bit quieter, but subjective; better in the wet but I dont have the balls to prove to myself they are better in the dry.

Downside is of course that the GM engineers designed the suspension etc for runflats. Non runflats have no impact on the sensors, only fitters who fit metal valve caps which of course then corrode which of course means when you try to remove one you break the valve which has the sensor integrated which means a £100 repair bill!

Marginally I recommend non run flats but must confess I am coming up to renewal and might go back to the run flats. After 60K miles I have not yet had a ouncture, so must be due...

Give Auto Image a try in Glasgow. I use their Edinburgh shop, always very competative and knowledgeable.
