Morning all,

Im filling out my V55/5 today and need to know where to find the engine number on my vet, Ive taken a day off work so I can go down to the local office and get it all sorted today, hopefully the good weather will hold up long enough for me to get her on the road,

Thanks in advance!

Usually you should just use the last 6 digits of the VIN number (not sure if this is accurate info), but from memory I couldn't find the engine number and no one at the DVLA queried it!

You won't get any problems at the local office as they have no way of checking.

Problems may arise if you car is selected randomly for inspection by DOT inspectors who will no doubt want to check all the info (perhaps they will know where it is !!!!!!)

Hopefully i wont get an inspection my bmw got inspected when i got my private reg transferred, what a nightmare that was!

4 inspectors checking out my car looking for any thing wrong, but in the end all they complained about was it being to low!

Nope, no problems at all, but then again when I registered my 1996 LT4 Coupe it was 1999 and the rules were probably simpler then!

The local DVLA office lost some of my paperwork which made things a bit interesting but after a bit of huffing and puffing they got things sorted.

The i.d. number is in the same place for both the LT1 and LT4 engine options in the 1996. Looking at the front of the engine, it is located on a protrusion of the block which is situayed to the front of the l/h cylinder bank (passenger side)However, you can not see it unless you remove an electrical component (possibly a coil) from the cylinder head as it is located below this. As Vetteheadracer states, unless the engine has been changed, the engine number should be the same as the last digits of the VIN number hence the importance placed on older Vettes of a 'matching numbers' car.
Best of luck with the checks.

well i knew it wouldnt go smoothly, they kicked up a real fuss over two points

1. i only have a fax copy of the HM customs form
2. i dont have a proper USA reg doc

the lady at the desk told me althought she has taken the forms, it may be rejected!

So its gonna be a tough few days before i get the news, and i have spent a small fortune buying the car and getting it through the SVA already.

Do i have any come backs if the DVLA refuse to register my car?

Simple answer, get the original form from HMCE and try to get the original title for your car from the US. Each state has it's own licensing office and therefore if you have a title from Virginia for example you will need to apply for a copy of the title from the Virginia Licensing Authority (all of them have web sites) it will probably cost you about $15 for a copy of the title.
DVLA will let you register it as long as you jump thru all the bureaucratic hoops that they put up.
