Z06 - great article in Auto Motor und Sport
Discussion
Auto Motor und Sport gives the Z five stars. My attempt at a translation of its conclusion is broadly (though my days of translating German well are half a life ago):
"Unbelievable what you get for your money here. The Z06 cannot just be bracketed with any old supercar for performance. It is a sports car fan's dream".
There is praise for performance, responsiveness, elasticity (? = manoeuvrability?), handling, cornering stability, precise steering (yay!), brakes, stability programming, equipment spec, useability, seats, internal space, luggage space, climate control and (resoundingly) price, which is about $95k/£55k i.e. a bit less than here in the UK.
Less positive aspects, in their view: fuel economy, maintenance costs, directional stability on bad roads, tight suspension, small fuel tank and a couple of things I can't figure out (steering & switch power??? poor front visibility???).
Pretty good overall. The comment on getting McLaren Merc SLR performance for 911 money is a good one!

Accepted that EVO wrote a good review, but the recent Autocar review of an official Euro car wasn't that complimentary (mag dated 7th Feb). They gave it a lower mark than the standard C6, as does the Times Online review.
Considering the Euro Z06 (and Circuit Paul Ricard) were made available early in Feb I would have expected at least some coverage in this month's mainstream UK mags.

So tell me what you think from driving it? Are the American mags right or the naysayers?
The journos are far more qualified to give a true opinion of the car than myself, but for me opening the garage door is still an occasion.
Firstly that negatives. I find the steering too light, the gearshift is very deliberate and yes on really bad roads bumps crash through the car, but things stay composed. However, there are plenty of other cars that this criticism could be levelled at.
On the other side, this car's acceleration is insane and I came from a car that could do 0-100mph in the 10s. Over 5,000rpm, the quality of the interior is not at the front of your mind. But at low rpm its perfectly docile. There's nothing to complain about re the braking ability either.
Reviews keep referring to poor quality B roads but there's 'horses for courses' and the Z has not been designed for that sort of thing. This car would be more suited to A roads and not just the straight ones.
Why don't the UK reviews factor in that at half the asking price, a Z06 is never going to be an F430? But for the money you are getting a very good level of hardware.

Well, the UK mags are working on putting this situation right as we speak!
Keep your eyes peeled over the next month or so...
The Z06 is an absolute monster, having spent the last week since delivery running it in and then testing it.
All the stories you hear about performance are true, and the comments on the interior not worth listening to, especially after driving a new Aston Vantage and touching the buttons and interior in that thing. The stereo controls on the Aston make the Corvettes interior feel expensive.

So Chris, should we be looking forward to something silver on the newsstands in the next few days?
