Looks like everyone's trying to get the LS engines for putting in everything else!
Bought performance car magazine and they've put an article in extolling hte merits of an LS1, on Twin Turbos put into an old shape Esprit.
Alas they didn't actually do it, it's another one of these fantasy articles (not that pleased in truth, I don't buy magazines for headline articles like this!)
Anyway, the turbo onstallation looks much compact, apparently from a Nottingham company 'Boost Performance' Anyone heard/seen any of their work?
Incidentally, they are claiming new LS engines, with box for a mere £4k - I am assuming this is also journalistic licence...

It's high time someone did a mid-engined LS installation, especially as the Corvette transaxle can be used for the job. Just lose the torque tube and away you go!
Heat dissipation is always a problem with mid-engined turbos so I'd stick with N/A. Choice of 350 bhp from LS1, 400 bhp from LS2 and 500 bhp from LS7 looks like a done deal.

Fran, thats my customer's engine they used for the feature. It's a bit more finished then in the pics for the magazine. I'm hoping to use 15-20 lbs of boost on it. I cast the exhaust headers and several inlet manifolds (which outflowed a ported Fast 90mm as well as the ls6 manifold). They got an early intake for the feature. New intakes have optional carbon trumpets inside. The charge coolers for that engine will fit between the turbo's and throttles. It will comfortably fit in an Esprit if I relocated the turbo's upwards which would make for a very fast Esprit! The gen 2 manifolds hadn't been finished at photoshoot time.
Yep, they have got the costs wrong, they are referring to 'pullout' engines & boxes for that price and I don't supply those anymore. Nice bunch of guys though.

Picked up a copy of the mag' today but their article is just a dream and one that would rapidly turn into a nightmare. They've based it around the oldest S1 Esprit.....
550 bhp into a 30 year old car built for 140 bhp.
S1 rear wheel location notoriously poor with drive doubling as the upper link. (Chapman cutting corners)
Heat build-up would destroy everything. Esprit turbos needed rear hatch vents and extra air intakes on the sides.
Radiator totally inadequate. Lack of air flow and space mean cooling hard to improve.
Tail lift would be lethal at speed. Esprit turbos with only 210 bhp needed a huge boot-lip spoiler.
Almost any feasible transmission would be ripped to shreds by a stock LS engine let alone turbo conversion.
Brakes would be hopeless. Tiny inboard rear discs awkward to upgrade.
Chassis would be overwhelmed. A later S3 or turbo chassis might stand a marginally better chance.
So if you've got £15k to spend a stock 1990s C5 or Esprit looks like a rock solid investment compared to this!
Nice idea though; maybe Noble should give it some thought.

5 USA, I don't think they're planning to try the turbo's (just a dream as you say) but a stock 320-400 odd hp engine could be quite feasible. I've not seen the engine bay of an early car or that car but have had a late car here and the bay is big enough to accept the engine if it's shoved forwards, thus leaving the box in the stock position. Are the later cars much better? A friend here has squeezed an ls1 into his Eclat
but he's also caged it to get a lot of extra strength.

Boosted - thanks for the reply - and sorry never made the connection originally!
Lovely job on the manifolds, it's interesting to see a 'log type' on an engine that'd normally have a bunch of bananas, (think I'm looking at it right). What effect does that have on lag and efficiency?
As for the Lotus, I thought Chapman's whole point wasn't to build in more than what is necessary, (his biography is a damn good read), so I'm not that surprised that to drop a large, torquey, engine in would require strengthening of the car, espectially a 70's Esprit! Someone does need to do it though, it'd be a very special and unique vehicle.
Back to the mag, yes they must be a good bunch, it's a good read. I just hope they don't run short of material and have to start putting more and more 'what if' sections.

Hi Fran, I made the manifolds that way because they are for retrofit installs, won't break or crack etc and are compact. Plus that way keeps the production costs down for me. I don't think log manifolds will have any really detrimental effects and I'm not scratching around for the last bhp.
The mag is good but they need material all the time. Tell them about your car and I'm sure they would be interested. They are true enthusiasts so anything modded will catch their eye. I help with lsx features and probably with the Cosworth 24v stuff and I'm happy to do that. it's nice to see my stuff in print from time to time
