Caterham have been out of CR500 195 45 R15 tyres for some time now. Can anyone recommend an alternative that is a soft enough compound to work with a light car like a Caterham?

The profile has to be no more than a 45 to fit under the wingstay.

All I can find are Toyo T1R. Anyone tried these and are there any other alternatives?

Think you'll find the T1R's are much harder than the CR500 as they are designed for saloon cars.

Have you considered a squiggly tyre, ala A048R or avon ZZR?

I was unable to find any 195/45 R15 CR500's and went to 195/50 R15 Toyo R888's they fit fine under the wing stays.
Brilliant tyre much better than the CR500 in my opinion.

A very good question as I am in exactly the same situation.

Neither of these are made in the 45 profile.

Very interesting, if a 50 profile tyre can be used (I'm not doubting it fitted your car!!) the choice available is greatly increased.
How much clearance between the tyre and the mudguard/wingstay did you have on the CR500 45 profile and how much clearance do you have now on the 50 profile tyres???
In theory a 50 profile tyre is 2cm larger diameter (than a 45) which will put it 1cm nearer the mudguard/wingstay. As I already have less than 1cm clearance between tyres and mudguard I can't see it working!!

Anyone else had experience of changing to a 195/15 50 profile tyre???

50 series tire definetly wouldn't fit on my car. The Toyos are also considerably heavier than the CR500's.
I was told by Caterham that they were supposed to get the 15" tires this week, but that was just an estimate

Why don't you buy direct from Avon? http://www.avonmotorsport.com/dealer-locator/uk/av...

I am running 205/50 15 all round on my car but the clearances are very tight. I have the larger wing stays for 16 in wheels that have been cut down to get the wing close to the tyre, to fit the 205 section I also run wider wings.
As for tyres I use the Toyota R1R and I am very pleased, great all round tyre, feel very like yoko AO21's that I had on a previous 7

According to their web site the CR500 doesn't exist, I had heard that Avon would only sell that tyre to Caterham direct although don't know if that's true.

Perhaps in the UK, but I get the tires here in the US through a somewhat local tire distributer. Ironically, I just got the call today that they are expecting my CR500's tomorrow.

BMTR have them in stock - a bit more expensive than the mon-existent Caterham ones though. If you have a CSR and tyres with no tread, you don't have a lot of choice though....

Has anyone found a workable alternative to the CR500s on a CSR that doesn't require a suspension change? Most alterantive tyres mess up the rake....

They might figure wise on paper, but if used on the road or not on the edge, i wouldnt worry about it. Ive been occasionally driving a CSR200 with 'non standard' tyres, although i cant remember the sizes or brand.....its a customer car. It didnt really make a huge amount of difference. If one could find a tyre that maintained a similiar side wall size approx then i would have a go with them.

After no call back from Caterham frown, I went to BMTR this lunchtime and had a couple of 15's fitted at £133+vat each, incl fitting.

First of all, you may like to try Bridge Tyres in Taunton, they recently supplied me with a set of CR500 for front and rear, agian, more expensive than Caterham, but at least they can order tyres in a reasonably short space of time.

Secondly, a 195/50/15 will fit under the front arches. I didn't even need to modify mine, but a couple of CSR owners have made the front hole that holds the inside of the wing a little larger, to lift the front of the guard off the tyre by a little bit, works a treat. I'm currently running 195/50/15 Potenzas on the front. The BIG problem though, is to find a suitable tyre for the back, especially one that is compatable with whatever is being used up front. Anyone got any ideas?

In all seriousness I have thought of down-sizing to some 14" Minilites to give me more tyre options. I would need to change to the smaller cycle wings as well though which then makes it a bit costly.

Why would you change the cycle wings? I regularly swap between 13" for track and 15" for road on my 7 (well, when it's not sickly frown) with no issues with the wings.

The best way is to try some on.
