I guess the 2lt Ford duratec engine is the one fitted to the likes of the Focus/Mondeo, but what Ford model runs the 2.3lt, or is it a bespoke Cosworth worked version for the CSR ?

I think it is a duratec basically with an engine block from Mazda/Ford, cosworth head, dry sump etc , all put together by cosworth or as was Minster Power.
Well, the one under the hood of my CSR looks like that.

Very torque"y engine.

Here's some infor of what, when, & where

http://duratec.wikispaces.com/

Ford did make a 2.3L that was mostly used in America but it is now discontinued. Most of the Duratec engines in Caterhams start as a 2L Duratec HE and are stroked to get 2.3L if needed.

I've a CSR 260. The 2.3 in the CSR is not a standard engine it as Cosworth pistons, 12:1 dry sump, different cams cranks inlets etc etc

There is alot that is not standard.

It starts life as a standard 2.3 engine.

Here in the states, the 2.3 was available in the Focus, the Ranger small pick-up, a Mazda or two, and I thought the Volvo C30 also (not sure on that one) - and maybe some other vehicles. I bought a Cosworth CSR260 crate motor from their Torrance, California office, and they told me the 260 bhp 2.3l engines they built used the Ranger block because it did not have the heavy balance shaft assembly the Focus units had, but they used the more freely breathing Focus heads (stock). Of course, the pistons, rods, etc. were Cosworth, but the point is that the block and head were both stock Ford items, as was the crank.
