Font number plates
Discussion
They are not strictly legal, but it is unusual to be picked up having one, even if it is 3/4 size (which looks better IMO).
I think the fine for not having a number plate is less £30, than having an illegal one (£60), but you are far more likely to get stopped.
Fancy plates will normally do a stick on one for you. You will need to ask for "show plates".

This is what the law says about fixing front plates. It gives some room for interpretation. (Paragraph 5 refers to bikes.)
(2) Except as provided in paragraph (5), a registration plate must be fixed on the front of the vehicle in the manner required by paragraph (3).
(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed—
(a)vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable,
(b)in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (4).

I know many owners who don't have a front plate, some for over 5 or 6 years, without a problem.
Some of them carry the plate in the boot, and stick it loosely on for MOTs.
I understand the penalty for having no plate is £30 and not endorsable with points, but you're much more likely, in the rare event that you are stopped, to just to get told to stick it back on.
For an illegally spaced/font/size plate however the fine is £60 and can also be endorsed with 3 points.
