what in your opinion is the best way to value your caterham? as there is no way youll ever get back what you put in after heavily modifying!
my car is so far from standard and is near inpossible to value as i have hardly ever seen another.(other than hillclimb cars)
1000 mile 07 hayabusa (supplied by yorkshire engines)
sbd dry sump
sbd high flow fuel rail
sbd billet clutch slave
sbd mbe ecu
sbd busa wiring harness
sbd generator (reg/rec) wiring harness
radical dry sump tank
arch gear linkage with full throttle flatshifter (translogic)
pi research (cosworth) omega D2 data logging dash (£2400)
carbon dash.front aero arches,rear arches
full cage,
grp caterham seats
bilstein suspension with adjustable platforms
front and rear arb
force racing cars high flow exhaust headers with cat delete and race cat
braided hoses and fittings
alloy header tank,oil catch tank
de dion axle
7" zf lsd

Mine's a 1993 Caterham with complete rebuild, many mods and a 2 year old engine. Despite the amount of work put in and ££££s spent it is still just a 20 year old car. So market value is unlikely to be as high as I would like.

However, for insurance purposes I use Guy Munday (L7C valuer) and have for several years provided him with photos and a full breakdown of parts and costs and, between us after some discussion, have come to an Agreed Value which he 'certifies' for my insurers. The insurers also have the photos and spreadsheet and they are always advised of any mods. So if the worst happens I would be paid the AV on a 'write-off'. I think having AV will probably increase your premium though.

As a conservative estimate I'd say that my AV is probably double the MV.

its a 1995 road registered supersport which was used for track use mainly. it came to me with a 1400 k series!
only problem is the bodywork is not mint. it has a few battle scars on side pannels and a small dent on the rear corner

There was an Bike engined SV on the mraket a few years back that required work to put it back on the road, it was priced around £10k

I would think around £14K mark, in my opinion.

£14k puts it into k series standard car money. You might be lucky to get £10k for it in today's market. It is a very specialised car with a narrow market.

the engine package with all electrics/dry sump, data logging dash etc cost almost £10k
so id hope for a fair bit more than that.
maybe not from a caterham owner but someone wanting a bike engine car,as other so called lesser makes with way less spec and lesser quality setup are making more than that.. it would be a fantastic hillclimber or sprinter also with around 200bhp and very light weight! thanks for the replies though

You bought a 1400k caterham last august for (guessing here) 10k or 11k?
Then spent over 10k putting a busa into it. So it owes you 21 or 22k.

So bodywork a bit tatty with a nice shiny busa installation. Tricky one. Def worth more than you paid for it.

I reckon somewhere between 10k and 15k. Small market so perhaps advertise at 14.5k and be patient. If you want to move more quickly, try 12.5. If you want shot try 11.5 and accept 10.9

Pure guesswork from me!

Bert
PS doesn't sound like a terribly good outcome though.

So you came and went then! Still can't understand what you were up to - you bought a 1400 SS that seemed to be in great nick and raved about by those in the know on the forum, messed about with installing a bike engine and now you're bored with it after what, 9 months? Each to there own I suppose but seems a bit of a waste of time.

...but to provide you with an answer of sorts to your question - mine is a 2002 Roadsport 1800 SS bought for £16k in 2007 with 1600 miles on the clock. Over the years I've spent about £7k on it with widetrack, DVA K16 (160bhp plus) then K05 (201.7bhp and 149lbft at Emerald), R500 exhaust and a few other bits to keep cosmetics fresh and original. It now has 12k miles on it and insurers have valued it at £20k to replace, so I suppose £18k privately on a good day. Being a fussy bu**** (just ask Jon at Millwood) I know £23k would not get me a car as well sorted and in the same condition as mine, so I hope I never have to make a full claim (or any claim, for that matter).

...but having done all that to it I couldn't dream of selling it!

About 18 months ago there was a maroon coloured busa engined 7 hillclimb car on here. It seemed to take ages to shift and you never really know if it actually sold, I seem to remember it not being too expensive either.

if you were in the financial position of me due to moving house, you would have no option but to release £20k in cash.
but your right,i am out of my depth financially with this car,not bored. but im only 31 and cant afford to keep it when my mortgage goes up. if i was staying where i am i would keep it as i love it. but as im not i simply cannot afford to move to a larger house with this car in the garage.
i have bought the best possible components to make this car as good as can be as i wanted to sprint it,but its eaten money in a big way and will be way too quick for me anyway! thanks for the answers and help

It is a truth unversally acknowledged that every Seven owner believes their car is worth far more than it actually realises when they eventually do sell it... I believed my last Seven was worth 11-12k ish and nobody seemed to disagree. After three months of little interest I bit the bullet and ended up selling the car for 8k. It ,too, was a fairly old chassis with lots of new bits - engine and suspension. I hope OP gets a good price - but Sevens are not depreciation proof and the market is limited comapared to mainstream stuff. And bike engines are not what everybody wants

The SV with the blackbird conversion went for around £8.5k but it wasn't a nice installation at all and I was surprised that someone would do that to a car they had owned from new! It is being converted to a CEC with lots of work being done to make it a decent car again so its definitely a second lease of life for it.

Unfortunately unless the OP's car is a very good conversion with an excellent installation and donor vehicle, it will be limited around the £12-13k mark I think as converted cars do not carry the premiums of the original models. If the bodywork and chassis is a bit tired, this could definitely impact on the price by £1-2k. Thus saying that there is always someone on the look out for a bargain and whilst a bike engine car is considered a small market, I think they do appeal to a bigger audience than might be appreciated and a Busa is always an attractive option as they are such an expensive conversion.
