Caterham "Clubman" type chassis.

As the title says, what is it? I'm interested in a 1996 car now fitted with a 1.8k and a cat but according to the chassis number it was kit built, 1.6k and has a clubman chassis. Never heard of that before.....

The one car produced that sounds similar was the Clubsport but that was around 1998.

If it was registered in 1996 and DeDion it's likely to be one of three chassis types available at the time ...
Pre '96 road/race chassis - handbrake under dash, early type front suspension;
Post '96 race chassis - handbrake under dash, later type front suspension;
Post '96 road chassis - tunnel handbrake, later type front suspension.

Does it fit with any of these?

It has central/tunnel handbrake. It's not a.clubsport as I think that was a bit later. The 7th digit of the vin is "C" which according to the chassis number guide I have, indicates its a Clubman, rather than HPC, SLR, Race car etc. I think it's more to do with the type of kit bought, than just the chassis type.

A bit of Googling regarding clubman chassis and it suggests that the term clubman is used when a chassis has extra features for multiple uses, rather like a bicycle would have braze-ons for mudguards! Excepting the race chassis I thought all Caterham DeDion S3 chassis were the same in the late '90s? Mine's designated a Superlight but other than the absence of a spare wheel I'm not sure it's any different to any other S3.
