Tyre size ..... 255 or 265 on 13" wheel
Discussion
Hi.
Are there any road legal tyres available which are either 255 or 265 width, for 13" wheels (10" wide), and are good tyres for a Caterham type car?
I've spent a while searching the www and the closest that I could find were 235s which suit a 9" rim. These were available from Peter Lloyd Rallying if anyone was interested.
Thanks, Andy.

Hi.
Thanks for the replies.
I looked at the Avon site here http://www.avonmotorsport.com/road-legal/performan... and there is mention of the CR500 245 fitting 8 to 10" rims, and yes, I was thinking about the heat getting into the tyres on those size wheels and tyres.
Re the car, it is a Caterham, but one quite different from standard. The build will start end of the summer / next winter. Too many commitments with customers cars etc at the moment.
I'm tempted to put the build thread on here and I've no doubt there will be other thoughts or questions from me first.
Thanks again,
Andy

Lots of hillclimb/sprint Caterhams are running 235/45R13 Kumho Ecsta V70A on the rear with 215/50R13 fronts. Kumho say 8" rim is optimum for both although most of us have 7.5" front and 8.5" rear. Some people have now switched to Avon ZZR in 215/55R13 (185/55R13 or 215/55R13 fronts).
For road use CR500 would be a decent choice and you can get the wider 245/50R13.
For a high power 7 there is no problem getting heat into any of these on track. For hillclimb use the Kumhos are available in a soft or supersoft compound and the Avon ZZRs are available in soft which is similar to the Kumho supersoft. For trackdays or racing you will want the medium compound in either tyre. I've even used the Kumho hard compound for trackdays.

Hello Mick.
Nice to hear from you again. How is your very nice car coming on and are the boats still getting in the way?

My car is very slow at the moment, I haven't touched it for months. Waiting for some parts to be finished....

It's nearly silly season now with the boats, so getting crazy busy! Then of course there's my own boat.. and a motorcycle project...
Looking forward to seeing what you're up too.
Seeing your work, I have a feeling it's going to be something very special.
For what it's worth, I'll be fitting the 245x13" Avon CR500's on a 9" rim to my car, with the 205's up front. That will give the same rolling diameter as the 15" setup on the CSR, but obviously with a nice compliant sidwall.
I found the 13" CR500's to give a very predictable feel on the limit.
You shouldn't have any problem getting heat into them. The CR500's on my old car warmed up pretty quickly. With a couple of blips on the throttle

Say "Hello" to Geoff for me, when you speak to him next

Hi.
Shaun, Thanks for your input there. That was very interesting.
Mick, He still doesn't wash his mugs too well!!
Yes, this has been in the pipeline for some time. A family illness and rebuilding an old cottage has got in the way.
Regarding the spec, I have loads of ideas floating around, some of which would be nice and others which would be plain stupid (putting in the 429ci Ford engine thats under the work bench being one of them)!
It's always been my intention to have the polished aluminium finish (but then again, a polished copper or brass bodied car would be different). I've recently come across the polished Caterham on the net called "Suginos custom built Seven". It's very nice and has obviously had big bucks spent on it but it could do with slightly less bling.

Are the 245/13" that avon offer the widest caterham rubber on offer? by which I mean is there a 305 or similar uber low profile 15" made by anyone that suits a lightweight car like a 7? It seems odd, given a quick hillclimb/ sprint caterham needs at least a 10" inch soft compound slick, you would expect to be able to get a road tyre laying down close to that area of rubber (- equates to around 305 given the missing bit for tread) plus allow for a harder compound but on other hand less power to spin it ...
