Hi,
just looking for a little help. My caterham superlight R is flat when i put the throttle down and then suddenly hits me with a load of power. The other problem is it when starting it fires and then stops. It cranks over and over occasionally fires and dies. Am I right guessing its the fuel pump? How do i change it if so.. Its a vhpd with a bag tank, does this complicate things alot?

I would be very thankyou for any help as we are at the Ring right now and but are on day 1 of a 2,300 mile road trip and have the overnight train down booked and leaving Dusseldorf for Austria tomorrow (Sunday) evening! Thinking it is safer to try and get this sorted near the ring before heading off into places with less facilities for car repair.

Thanks guys

It doesn't sound like a fuel pump problem - the symptoms are normally power falling away as the pump fails to deliver the higher fuel rate needed. Your symptoms sound like the opposite.

Check that the spark plugs are all seated, but you could be looking at a faulty coil - these often give a flat spot when they start to fail due the vibrations at certain rpm.

It could also be a problem with the throttle butterfly sticking and not letting the right amount of air in. If you have the plastic plenum this can happen if the jubilee clip holding it on is too tight.

It is a bit difficult diagnosing it remotely, but remember that you need to check fuel, air and spark. If you have changed anything before the trip, start there.

My knowledge is limited, but first port of call for things like this is usually the Throttle Position Sensor, which on the K Series SLR is on the forward end of the Throttle Bodies. Have a read of this thread on Blatchat for details of the settings. You'll need to get hold of a multimeter.

Also can you hear the fuel pump prime before the engine fires? The bag tanks have internal fuel pumps so if it's that you're a bit buggered frown However, I agree with Steve, if the engine runs fine at higher rpm then I'm not sure it is. Start with the TPS and let us know how it goes!

Good point grenpayne - I'd forgotten about the throttle position sensor! Definitely a candidate for the symptoms described.

Had similar symptoms caused by TPS fault.

If you disconnect it does it change anything?

Have you tried it with the fuel filler cap off? Just a thought....

Sounds like ye olde SLR at the Nurburgring issue! SLR's didn't have Baro sensors as standard, and don't like altitude.

that sounds strange. A quick google says that the nurburgring is between 300m and 600m above sea level. That's going to be between 98% and 95% of the air pressure at sea level. Is the k that sensitive without a baro?

If there is anything you need Caterham parts wise, if you are able to, get to Hoffmans (german caterham agent) who aren't too far from the Ring (circa 50kms)

Hoffmann & Rink GmbH / Caterham Deutschland GmbH - Danziger Straße 6 - 56564 Neuwied
Telefon: +492631-39360 - Telefax: +492631-393638 - info@hoffmann-rink.de

PS I would guess at TPS. My SLR doesn't have a barometer and hence has no correction for altitude, and has never had any issues in over 30 trips to the 'Ring.

PPS spreak to Dale Lomas at Rent4Ring if you need assistance locally, he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciated and sorry for my late reply.

Having driven the car more at varying altitudes I agree its probably not the fuel pump, it primes and if found the car runs best on light or full throttle. Partial throttle just makes the car undrivable. I think it may be poor altitude correction on this engine as standard combined with a problem you have mentioned like the TPS or plugs that is making it behave so badly.

I think I need to find somewhere that I can get a TPS replaced, we are now in Italy and have a rest day tomorrow at Menaggio, Lake Como so should have a chance to find somewhere to change it.

Does anyone know what TPS is on these? Is it it rover or Bosch part?

Thanks all
