1.6 Sigma to Duratec conversion
Discussion
I've seen a very nice 1.6 Roadsport (125) for £20,000 and I'm quite tempted however what I really want is an R300/400. Sadly these are few and far between and command quite a premium.
Tuning the Sigma still looks very limited and costly so I was thinking that given the exhaust is on the same side of the car, it would probably be more cost affective to just drop in a Duratec lump with throttle bodies and ECU. Other than a new exhaust manifold and engine mounts, what else would be needed to achieve this? Has anyone done it or looked into it? Any suggestions welcome.

I have a Sigma 150 and thought about converting to a Duratec but all things considered the eventual cost wouldn't have been all that different to getting my current car upgraded with someone like Premier Power. In the end I didn't bother as the cost would never have been reflected in its eventual resale value. Better off selling you car and getting one with a Duratec already installed.
The cost of converting on top of 20 grand, you'd be better buying a duratec car in the first place.

An older car but just slightly more than the sigma. Jeffc will sell you a nice duratec car for probably the cost of what the sigma and a proper duratec conversion would set you back!

Hi Kal-El,
Lets' look at what's involved with converting a Sigma car to a Duratec powered car.
Parts required;
Dressed Duratec engine complete with induction, air filter / air box, alternator installation, flywheel, clutch and starter motor.
Bell housing
Engine mounts
ECU
Engine wiring harness
Exhaust system
Possible skin and paint job on right hand side of car (is exhaust hole in same place on Sigma car to Duratec car?)
Coolant hoses
Labour to carry out the conversion
If you're looking at Ford engined Caterhams up to 200 bhp, I'd consider looking at a Sigma powered car. If you want more than 200bhp then I'd look at a Duratec car.

I certainly wouldn't buy a Sigma just to upgrade to a Duratec. You're better off just waiting and finding the right car.Tuning the Sigma still looks very limited and costly so I was thinking that given the exhaust is on the same side of the car, it would probably be more cost affective to just drop in a Duratec lump with throttle bodies and ECU. I have recently had a fast passenger ride in the 200hp sigma powered super light from premier power. Wow! very impressive.
the engine is also significantly lighter than the duratec & offers better ground clearance.
See how you get on with the standard 125 first, it's a sweet engine with good torque & lovely pops & bangs on the overrun.

I am very close to putting the f200 conversation on my supersport. The duratec is a great engine, but the sigma , for me is the perfect match for the seven. Just got to get up to premier power to have a go of the f200. It's not a cheap upgrade, but I think it'll perform a little better overall that a R400,.
How much are the 175 and 200 upgrades? There doesn't seem to be much info on tuning the Sigma which is a surprise as its been around a while now.
What are the most aggressive cams you can fit with the standard pistons and induction? I see catcams, Newman, Piper and Kent all have numerous offerings.
What are the specs of the std head? (Flow, valve sizes etc) I've seen a fully ported head for £600 from OC Motorsport. What gains can realistically be had here?
Also, what is the bottom end like? When do you need to consider forged pistons and steel rods etc?

Regarding the subject of noise, Premier's F200 has been through a static noise test measuring noise 1 meter from the end of the exhaust at 4500rpm. The recorded noise level was 97 db on two separate occasions. This car was running the standard Caterham exhaust with cat by pass pipe fitted. The engine was not running any kind of airbox, although airboxes are available if induction becomes as issue on drive by tests.

I don't suppose if you know if it's been tested using the MSV circuit standard which is quite a bit different?

The initial test is a static test which is carried out using a handheld meter. Each car is measured 0.5 meters away from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle when the engine is being held at ¾ of the maximum RPM.

Hi Redcat7
The noise test results we have were carried out at a motorsport-events.com day. Hand held noise meter was held at an angle of 45 degrees, 1 meter from the exhaust exit and the engine held at 4500rpm. 97 db noise readings were reported to us. Unfortunately I don't have any drive by noise tests results yet although I think the results of these can vary according to how the readings are actually taken.

Hi K800 RAM,
We have the BMW diff in our F200 Caterham. Fully aware of the noises it was making and these have now been put right, unfortunately we didn't have time to sort this before our open day. We've just fitted the latest spec carrier from Caterham along with the rear plate. Whilst out we also removed the sinted plates and replaced them with carbon plates. The noise issue has now gone.
