Me again, be gentle, 2nd topic of this year.

being 22, looked and ordered a new caterham, unbuilt, with so many extras that it seemed so
unreal that I was finaly getting on the market.

Then there was the fact of insuring, running and servicing the car that I have always dreamed of having. It may not be that much to run a caterham day in day out. So cancelled the order and saved my expense of paying 19K.

But. Still want one, for so many reasons, 1 including friends have p1's, elises, and a pink 2cv with fluffy interior. (Don't ask)

so, looking for a R300 for my first caterham, achievable? and where is the issue?

please tell me your comments....

oc- not really sure what you are asking here? you couldnt afford an R300 before but you can now perhaps? or if you should buy one? or what?

If its merely R300 perfomance you are after you can easily match, or even far exceed R300 performance with an older used caterham & save yourself a lot of ££.

R300 perhaps is about the tops you'd want power wise for a 1st 7 if you are not used to RWD, perhaps even a lower powered 7 would be a better choice as your 1st actually.

Would you say a superlight R would be the best buy as an equivlent? Or is there another model which would be better?

Delightful car, hampered at the last hurdle by a paucity of fleet in the foot department.

Not sure what you're asking either. You had one ordered and even had a decent insurance quote? Servicing etc would be reasonable too...

If you want a cheaper "in" to the 7 game, scour the For Sale ads on blatchat etc and you'll find something. Just re-read the advice you were given last time.

End of the day, R300 etc was the then latest incarnation. Fact is, a 10yr old car can be set up and driven almost as quickly on track, and on the public road it can definitely be driven as quickly.

dcw - used SLRs are very good buys I think. But as a first 7 for a 22yr old, it may not be such a good idea! An original superlight would probably be a better bet, and will hold its value pretty well allowing access to an SLR later.

DeR - how you getting on with your R400?

I cut my teath on a nice supersprint 1.7 xflow and then move up to the SLR. But I was quite a bit older then 22 and with a lot more driving experience and couses under my belt. 27 to be precise.

Be careful, they are not toys and will kill the inexperienced and foolish - (as will any car but more one the edge then most others)

Buy my original Superlight for £16k - its a fantastic package with everything the R300 has on it and more (LSD, latest R400 wheels. CR500 tyres, and FULL carbon pack), ands its in concourse condition 21,000 miles FSH (as a private sale this is considerably cheaper than the dealers would charge for the same car - Caterham have one not as good on their books for £21k), for more info see ad on ebay this week .... go to
