battery connection woes

So I am working towards the end of my rebuild. its 2006 roadsport with K series. today I started to reconnect the battery. I have a short earth bonding cable 300 mm long I think that goes between the chassis and a connector on the alternator alternator but not sure - but thats where ive connected it?? I took it apart but memory failing these days.

I find a bundle of black wires on one spade connector and thick black wire on another and connect those together to the neg on battery.

I find a thick red wire on its own and two thinner brown wires I connect those to the positive. as I do so there is a spark as if something is drawing a load, there is a red light on the speedo.

after a few seconds the clutch cable gets hot as if the load is being pulled through there.

Something is not right Obviously - can anybody tell me what Ive done wrong?

No lights connected front or rear and ignition off.

Ive done a little googling and found the engine to chassis earth should run from the engine mount bolt to chassis rubber bolt -so I was close but incorrect.
