Removing the spare wheel bracket

I have an H reg Caterham which has the traditional spare wheel and bracket which I want to remove. The bracket has two sections at the bottom which I assume I have to saw off and there is a central pin which goes through a hole in the back of the car.
Does anyone have an idiot proof guide for doing this and what have other people used to cover up the hole?

Sorry for the bad images, I'm preparing the car for painting.
I had and still have the same option for a spare wheel or luggage/bikerack option.
I cut the standard bracket of leaving a bit of the tube extended. Then welded a threaded bush into it.

With a bit of welding and bracket making you can attach your numberplate directly on those bushes, and with extension tubes you could also use the spare wheel etc.
I just left the threaded bush on the hole in the rear panel as it is.

I cut mine off carefully leaving a stub 50mm long so I could make the carrier detatchable. I used a jubilee clip as a cutting guide so it was nice and straight. The stubs are plugged with bar end plugs from the cycle section of halfords. I used the number plate light bracket from caterham. The plate is velcroed on resting on top of the stubs. Took about an hour in total. Take your time. Also used a centre cap badge to cover the spare wheel mount boss. This was one of the first mods I did to the car when I first got it.
I REALLY like Harry's idea, never thought it that and have fought with Velcro on the back of our car to keep light/plate on since I cut it off.
Given it's p*ssing it down in So. Bucks I'm going out to our garage after breakfast to look at doing same. I've already got some stock that fits into the holes which currently have black plastic covers on them.

Not quite clear in the picture, but the tube on the bracket for the plate fits over the little stubs remaining.Given it's p*ssing it down in So. Also making some extensions, with longer bolts gives you a bracket which can hold, in my case my bicycle
