Is there any benefit in replacing the standard air filter box (with its tiny intake) with a K&N cone type air filter?

With the standard engine mapping, is there likely to be any increase in HP?

Is the airbox on the R300 the same as on the SuperSport R? If so then I'd assume a switch to a cone filter would probably make matters worse. On the SuperSport, cold air is being drawn into the airbox through the small cut out in the bonnet. If you changed it out for a cone filter then I'd assume it would be contained within the bay and therefore end up drawing in hot air from under the bonnet. Again, I'd assume this would negate any gains that might be forthcoming from getting more air to the engine in the first place?

You will lose power if you remove the air box!

interesting. I know that cold air is denser and makes for more power with all things being equal, but the aperture on the air box is tiny. I thought perhaps the difference in flow would more than make up for the fact that the car is pulling in warmer air.

(the air box is the same as the Supersport R btw)

Don't the R400's run a cone type filter? Pretty sure the 485 does as well.

I tried taking the airbox off at Emerald. Made a tad more power but mid range torque fell through the floor on the rr

The Duratec in my Roadsport 175, which IIRC is the same as the R300, has a K&N cone filter.

When the air box was fitted in place of the cone filter during its development there was an increase of approx 6bhp.
This was a back to back test, same time, car, and conditions etc.
