My Caterham 6-speed gearbox suddenly gave up on me on a trackday the other day. It was on the day's last cool down lap, 200m from the track exit. I could roll with the clutch down all the way to my trailer.

Anyone have an idea of what could have went wrong and what my options are based on these pictures? It works but sounds bad, and I've opened the lid and can't see anything wrong except what is on the pictures below.

1. Buy a new Sadev sequential box (€€€€ but best excuse ever!)
2. Send it to a pro (€€ it will be finished when it starts to snow...)
3. DIY repair and weld the casing (how hard could it be??)

I'm based in Stockholm so Road and Race is a bit far.

Wow! At a guess something has come loose and punched its way out. Expert help is needed to asses the damage and I think there's a good chance that might be a write-off frown.

I would still talk to Road and Race on the phone, just ask for Phil. I taked to him at great length before my gearbox went for a refresh this last winter. If nothing else it might confirm what your options are.

He refreshed my 6 speed with a good turn around. He knows them inside out, give him a buzz.

That is a pin failure that holds a nut at the rear of the box, the nut has come loose and as you've changed gear it's pushed it out through the casing. The casing as a minimum will need replacing but Phil at Road and Race is the man to talk too.

I'm sure the case can be welded up.
