According to this document (released 2013) all kit or amateur built cars are only to receive a visual test at MOT time.

That being the case, my 2004 ex Academy (1.6 K-Series equipped) car only needs a visual test by virtue of the fact it's kit built.

This goes against other stuff I've read - any takers?

Very interesting and yes it is different to anything else I've read but the important bit on page 17 seems to suggest visual smoke test only for amateur built -

"CATERHAM CARS
The VIN Code consists of the 6th, 8th and 9th digit of the VIN number. Where the 10th digit of the VIN is equal to or
less than 'W' and the 6th digit is 'C' or 'K', the vehicle concerned should be considered as 'amateur built' and as such
should receive a visual smoke test only"

Well spotted!

I see that you interpret it the same way I do.

My regular MOT Tester is pretty clued up and very much friendly forces so I'll have a chat with him next time I'm in town to get his take on it.

I think the answer is the 'less or lower than W' this is the letter which indicates the year plate of the car. It has to comply with the age of the car AND being kit built.

You might be right.

The tenth figure on my cars VIN is a 3 so I guess that would relate to 2003 maybe?

To be fair, I'd like to think my car with catalytic converter fitted would pass an emissions test but I stumbled across the document online.

Read pages 2 and 3 for information about the tests applied based on vehicle age.
