K-Series oil consumption??
Discussion
Guys I need some help here.
I bought my Caterham 1800 140 which I collected from a garage approximately 9 weeks ago. Its a completely stock car and it was fully serviced prior to collection. Its had done 14,800 miles. I then drove it to Cologne in Germany, plus a few hundred miles since I got back (2,200 in total). 10 days ago I was out on a drive and 2 big end bearings failed. I nursed the car home and checked the oil. It needed just over 3 litres topping up. I called the garage and they duly collected the car. They have replaced the bearings under their warranty but blamed me for not checking the oil. Given that it had just had a full service only 9 weeks ago, I don't feel that the level of oil consumption is right, however they tell me this is normal with Caterhams. Personally I highly doubt this, as I had a stock Elise that I did 40,000 miles in without any oil consumption at all. What do you think should I do?
Thanks

There is no doubt that checking the oil level would have been wise, and I do tend to check the level regularly on cars new to me as some use more than others.
With a Caterham driven hard, I tend to check each time I take it out, and several times during a track day.
I don't own a K series, but have never heard that they are prone to high oil consumption.
3 litres in 2200miles is not normal oil consumption. Have you got a leak or has all that gone into the exhaust?
If it has burnt that much oil, it sounds like it needed a rebuild when sold.
Good luck
