How to know if your LSD needs to be rebuild?

Just out of curiosity,

i have a Trans-x LSD in my Cat.

Seems to work fine, you can clearly hear it when driving slow or when pushing the car with the hands.

But how can i know, when i have to rebuild it and fit new friction plates?

jack it up and turn 1 wheel only listen for noise . is the diff oil silver and metalic looking if so diff on its way out
