Bonding on front wings
Discussion
Im also completing a new build and was planning the same, but I have need told that cable ties will defiantly not pass the IVA. the wings need to be screwed or bonded.
Can anyone recommend a type of bonding???
PS I want to take these of afterward and replace with carbon - the indicators

This was a subject that annoyed me when building my Seven.
I was told by Caterham that I had to bolt the wings on to pass IVA.
When I picked up the car, after they put it through IVA, a mechanic told me that they bond theirs on and they get through IVA OK!
I would think cable ties would be unlikely to satisfy an IVA tester, they insisted on metal bolts for rear wings rather than the plastic ones I used. Bonding straight on to the stays might be acceptable, but makes removing them much more difficult.
Bolts are easy and reliable.

Thanks guys.
When you say bonded on, is that directly to the stay, just put the sikaflex on the stay and stick the wing on, as it were?
I have looked at using bigheads with studs but you can only put them on one stay, I think as if you put them on both the angle is too great for them to pull out of both stays together. (Hope that's clear!)
I'm looking at studded bigheads and sikaflex on the front stay and SS bolts on the rear at the moment.

As with many aspects of my build, I did, contrary to the assembly guide, what Derek told me...
Quote: We use Terostat to bond the wings, when using it make sure you take the powder coating off the wing stays and rough up under the wing. Don't use too much to initially bond the wing. When it has stuck put some more on in the infill's using a wet gloved finger to smooth it down.
The cleaning is as otherwise the bond between the wing and the powder coat is often better than between the powder oat and wing stay!

On both my 7's I used bigheads and cable ties, no problem at IVA. I've just fitted a new pair of carbon wings to my car using the same method I used for my academy car (see the link below) using Sikaflex 292. I use this again now after I had a failure of a bond when I used 'Big Bond' adhesive (below) at 126 mph at Castle Combe. I've never had a failure with Sika 292 in about 10 years of hammering around.

I use sikaflex on my wings. Rough up the underside and make sure they are clean. Use some masking tape to help show where to put the bond and then put a decent amount across the wing and a thick bead or two on the wing stay. Pop the wing on the car and apply a bit of pressure whilst it sets. i stick the front wheel back on and gently tighten a luggage strap around the wing and wheel and leave it overnight to dry. Then remove the wheel and using a spatuala (old credit card will do), I then effectively encase the wing stay in sikaflex i.e. apply lots more and smear from the wing, under the stay and back up the other side of the stay.
I had a email conversation with one of the local Sikaflex lab guys.
I explained what i was doing and that it would be under tension prob cos of the wind and he suggested I used the windscreen adhesive, it came in a pack with 2 small tins of primer + the tube o stuff.
he said its all about the prep.. so get down to metal on the stay, rough up the wing and clean both with a solvent. apply primer to both surfaces then glue
I did use bloody loads of the glue in layers spreading out over an 1.5-2" strip accross the wing
