I'm looking to rent a Caterham so me and my girlfriend can go on a bit of a driving holiday and I also would like to drive a Caterham to see if it's something worth saving up for!

However, I'm only 25 and for various reasons (uni etc) I've only had my licence for a year. Am I completely out of luck if I want to rent a Caterham? Anyone know of any companies that would offer Caterham rental to someone like me?

Minimum age is 23. Fly to Aberdeen, train up there and you have some of the finest roads in the UK to enjoy a Caterham on. Not cheap mind!

Looks tempting, trip up to Scotland would be good fun.

Shall also ask Caterham about how long I will have to have held a licence for to hire one, as they don't actually say on their website.

I drove my Caterham 7 back from the Nairn Games earlier today: round by Grantown on Spey across the Lecht and then down through Alford back to Aberdeen. I saw a couple of the Caterhams from Highland Caterham Hire up in the mountains. Hardly any traffic on the roads and the scenery is to die for, although I would probably take them over West to Shieldaig and Applecross, personally. Boyd the owner is a very helpful chap, and I liked the one me and my mate hired so much I went and bought one.....

No mention on there website but I tried hiring from here before I'd had my licence for 2 years and they wouldn't let me.

OP, if you do have to wait until you've had your licence 2 years, give Blue Sky Caterham a try (no affiliation). I rented from them last year and it was awesome (which will be the same wherever you hire from). But the service from Alec and Phil was great.

I only had the car for one day so was eager to get out and not waste anytime. Alec got me out in about 15 mins from arriving, including paperwork and showing me round the car / how the roof works (it was a nice day so rather than a full on demo of the weather gear he just gave me some instructions).
They said for me to aim to return it for 5pm (i think most are 4pm) but up to 6pm would be fine. It was back at 5.50pm after a mad dash through the forest of Bowland and a quick fill up at the local garage.
They also only charge 50ppm for extra miles and have cottages available to rent on the farm if you want to make a short holiday of it.

Here's a pic of my car, Roadsport SV 125:

Honestly the most fun I've ever had !!

I rented one when I was 21 from Caterham (when it was in Caterham) about 4 years ago. They had to run it by their insurers first and they were ok with it. It was dependant on my driving history.

Thanks for the advice, we'll try talking to Caterham and see what they can do.

Caterham hire in Wales would have been perfect! Maybe in a few years time when my licence has matured

Really wish I had done it before uni now....

There kind of is a reason for it though .. a bit of experience behind a wheel will not go amiss when stepping into a Caterham for the first time. I'm not saying that they're difficult to drive, but a few new owners with a lot more experience have come a cropper on their way back from picking one up.
My daughter's had a licence for 2 years and has driven daily for over a year but there's no way I'd let her out in the Caterham yet!!
