Hi,

this might be a difficult to answer question but maybe someone knows.

I got a 2002 Blackbird with the nowa/pace drysump system.

4 Weeks ago my gearbox was worn out after years of abuse so i changed the entire engine.

When inspecting parts i found my dry sump pump was pretty worn inside. I think the reason for this are the chips from the geardogs get unfiltered into the scavenge pump.

Anyway, i got a new pump, but this one was shorter then the old one that was fitted, but it bolted right on. The old one was grind down by the pre owner to get it fitting...

The car runs fine again with the new pump, but the pump is arround 500pound + vat so i want my new one to last long.
In my spare parts from the pre owner there was a third broken pump that was similar to the pump that i now fitted and inside this bag there was a housing for small filter tubes.

I think original the car was delivered with the small pump and the filter housing.

Another blackbird owner i know has also the longer pump without filters fitted, so there might also be a reason for using the longer pump but he also doesnt know.

Here is a picture. Right is the longer type pump, in the middle the short pump and left the filter housing that only fits on the short pump.

Now i want to fit the filter housing to the new shorter pump i just fitted. But i am a bit worried as i don't know why my car was fittet with the longer pump so as the other blackbird i know also is. I have had two track days and some road miles with the short new pump and everything was fine.

Has someone knowledge about the fireblade and blackbird oil systems?

Best Regards

Christoph

Why not give Nova (www.novaracing.co.uk) a call, always found them to be very helpful

I would ask on the locost (BEC) forums if there is a baffle for the sump to negate the need for a dry sump.
I have run a few R1 5VY powered cars which in the early days had to have a dry sump system but then Andy Brooks came up with a much better system of a baffle in the sump.
The dry system let me down a couple of times the baffle never did.
Unless of course a wet sump is too low, in which case I'll shut up!

PS. There are a lot more locust/kit cars running bike engines than Caterhams so those forums may still be a good place for info.

Hi,

a wet sump is not possible because of ride high and i want to keep the car original.

Nova wont know because they only made the oil pan. I will call pace because i want to have my old pump refurb and then ask them if the know or what they recommend to fit. But i also doubt the will know it because only a hand full of these cars have been build and this was 15 years ago.

I would give Andy Bates a call (sorry not Brooks).
He is at AB Performance engines and is a really nice guy.

He probably supplied the engine to Caterham.

Didn't James Whiting build the original Blackbirds?

Not sure I'd ever bother to call Pace about anything!
