Engine on Supersport R completely blown
Probably my fault for not keeping on top of the oil
Take heed!
Anyway, I now need to source a new engine
Has anyone experience of this and if so can you point me in the right direction?
Mine was a 2ltr duratec (circa 200bhp)
Always found the engine slightly dull so could put something a bit livelier in there?
Any thoughts (about new engine, not what a dunce I am for blowing the old one) welcome
Thanks in advance

Never tried a Duratec, but when my K-series R400 threw its timing belt I got my new engine from VGK in Spain. It's an upgraded K -series opened up to 2.0 litres. Thoroughly nice chap to deal with and lovely components. Mine is now anything but dull - lots of torque with around 210 bhp and sounds like a racing car. Done about a dozen track days and a couple of thousand road miles since with no issues.
Probably no good for your car I guess (though it's nice having the exhaust on the passenger side...)

Have you seen this one in the motorsports parts.

Nothing to do with me but should give you a bit more bang.

Hi Martin,
Sorry to hear of your woes.
I have the same model and I know what you mean about it being slightly dull in character but rest assured that's nothing to do with it being a Duratec as its a great base engine to work with its just in a rather relaxed state of tune in the base SSR. It's essentially a crate ford engine with a caterham designed inlet manifold, exhaust and a custom ECU with associated map. There is nothing inherently special about the setup but is a great place to start from. However, if you put racier cams in it (such as in the base R400 / 420R models and also put it onto throttle bodies then the whole thing becomes a lot more interesting so trying to find an R400 engine from somewhere or building up a new crate engine to those specs would be a good place to start looking. Alternatively that R500 spec engine linked to above is another option and actually seems very good value for money when you factor in all that will have been done to get it to that spec.
Have you contacted Caterham to see whether they could supply you a ready to go R400 spec engine?
Another option would be to speak with Stuart from Premier Power to see whether he could help you out. If he's able to get a replacement base 2.0 Duratec from somewhere then he could build it up to whatever spec you want
I'm sure.
Tom

His highness, DCL, has a great thread on here about how he converted a 2L duratec to beyond R500 power. That’s a nice project!
Or pick up an R400 duratec and put rbtbs on it.
Or stick in a 2.3L duratec.
As you can see, there is a duratec theme here. That’s because they are cheap, offer loads of tune options and fit into the basic architecture you already have.
Good luck!

Thanks all for the replies...
Bizarre how these things happen. The arrival of our first child prompted me to make changes to my beloved fleet. The 911 was culled, replaced by an Alpina. Which is great - and brand new - yet has been back to BMW twice since delivery (a fortnight ago). My neighbour remarked that the Caterham would have to go next and I dug my heels in, thinking i'd hold onto it for the odd blat and maybe even a track day if I can wangle it with Mrs P now we have a much busier family life.
However, the blown engine is now making me think about letting it go. It's been an absolute joy and has given me many memories that will last forever (Spa trip, track days, touring trips round the Lakes and those oh so sweet short summer evening blats). Yet in truth, staring down the barrel of the hassle and cost associated with sorting a new engine - and given how little I've actually used the car in the last 12 months makes me tempted to get rid.
Financially I'll lose out but maybe the project that is dropping in a new engine and ending up with a properly sweet car is for someone else.
So, you guessed it...next question is how to sell an otherwise perfect Supersport R (the original press car GN62AEZ) with no engine!

Ah! The yellow one?
I lusted after pics of your car many times before finally taking the plunge and buying one myself.
I bought mine as a kit and built it. Having done so I can confirm it wasn't hard fitting the engine and a swap for a new one wouldn't be tough for someone who knows what they are doing. It would also be a fun project if you fancied doing it yourself?
To build it back to its current spec all you really need is a base 2.0 Duratec, take your old one out, shift all the ancillaries over from old to new engine and refit it. It's not a massive task really.
if you wanted rid in its current form, what would you guess it was worth/ what would you be happy with?

This. It's well within the ability of a local garage to carry the work out though there are engine rebuild specialists who will probably do it better and cheaper. Frankly most of us here could do it in a weekend.
I expect the price difference between getting it fixed and selling cheap will be worth the effort.

Should also have asked, when you say blown engine, what is it that's actually happened to it? Is it truly beyond repair?
This. Unless its put a rod through the block it probably worth rebuilding to keep the correct engine number etc if it is a known car (ie press demonstrator). CDP said:

Anyone know any engine rebuild specialists? Asking £19.5k for car as is It's well within the ability of a local garage to carry the work out though there are engine rebuild specialists who will probably do it better and cheaper. Frankly most of us here could do it in a weekend.

Your profile says Cheshire - but not sure how far away you are from Llangollen?
Kenrick Motors are an official Caterham service/warranty centre - its a proper old school garage and know their way around Caterham's and restore all sorts. They were rebuilding a Discovery engine when I was there last so well capable of sorting you out.
Not always the quickest turn around, but really impressed with their level of care and knowledge.
