1988 Caterham engine paint colour

Can anyone tell me what the original engine colour was on the 1700 Super Sprint Kent engine. As part of this question were sumps the same colour or black? Thanks in advance.

This photos is from my 1985 Super Sprint - sold 10 years ago. The engine was all black, including the sump. Time, heat and mileage have effected the finish.

Original colour was in a Ford red engine paint but many recoated black. Certainly a lot of rebuilds such as those produced by Vulcan were in black

My 1991 Scholar Engine came in a dark red colour. I've repainted recently in a brighter red.

I can't say I have ever seen a Super Sprint with a red engine and I've seen plenty over the last 34 years.

The photo above of my old Super Sprint (C225RPM) which I owned from new, shows the engine after about 15,000 to 18,000 miles of use and was as it came from the Caterham factory. It was never rebuilt or removed from the car in my ownership.
