420 Running Hot ?
Discussion
Hi All,
I’d welcome some thoughts on whether my car’s current behaviour is common or not.
The temperature the car runs at seems to have changed over the last few outings ( I guess also impacted by the glorious weather ). It used to sit quite comfortably at an indicated 90 degrees and would be able to sit in traffic for a while before the temps rose and the fan kicks in. Now, cruising at 50 or above keeps the temp at 90, anything less and the temp rises quickly and the fan cuts in.
It’s never overheated, it’s just that I’ve noticed the change.
I did fill it with vPower by mistake in the previous fill up, would that cause it to run hot ?
Grateful for any guidance.
Thanks

V Power wouldn’t cause it to run hot.
IMO 90 is too hot anyway though I know there’s a lot of variation. My R400D runs at 80/82 when driving normally.
After a spell of gentle running, though it will stay around 80/82, it will fall the first time it’s wound up, to 2/3 degrees below 80, then gradually climb back.
On track, it will run up to 85 after a hard run at high ambient but never higher.
I think in recent years the Duratecs that CC use are assembled somewhere different to a few years ago and now run a higher temp stat. Better for economy but not much else.
Unless you have a coolant loss I’d be checking your stat.

My 420 sits around 90 all the time when warm, it will dip below when on a longer run with lots of airflow and less aggressive acceleration.
The fan hardly kicks in unless it’s a very hot day and stop starting in traffic.
It’s never overheated though and I’ve have it checked by Caterham to confirm all sensors are working correctly when in for previous issues.
