We moved to NZ last year. I’m thinking of getting a Caterham or local 7 replica. I’ve seen this ex UK car:

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/lotus/othe...

Wouldn’t be what I would necessarily look for in the UK (that would be R300 or similar) but that is the only Caterham on the market.

What would be a fair price for that in the UK? £15k?

If it really has had a replacement chassis and body then I would think the price would be higher than £15k in the UK (unless the reason for the new chassis and body are that it was an insurance write-off in the UK).

Perhaps have a look at what Caterhams (and PRBs) are going for in the Aussie classifieds and use those as a benchmark.

It's nuts really, if it had a new chassis because the old one had rotted away, it'd be worth much more than if it had had one because of an insurance writeoff.
But certainly having a completely new chassis in 2013 should make it in good condition.

Looks a good choice to me.
I've had a chassis replacement, and it basically makes the 7 'as new'.
No reason to worry about that at all.

Could you not get exactly what you want in the UK and shipped over for less?

I appreciate what others have said about it being a virtually new 7 because of the new chassis, etc but if it's £15k in the UK and £20k in NZ, then does it cost £5k to ship a car from here to there?

I suspect that it's not the shipping costs but the rules around importing cars that would be the big issue.

For example on this website:

Personal import would be 20% VAT plus I think around £2k for transport then there would be the cost and hassle of getting it registered for use here in NZ. So buying at £15k in the U.K. would be at least £20k here.

Have you had a look at Fraser? Most fun three days of driving I have had doing a loop round roads north of Auckland

Yes I’ve been in contact with them. When we finally get out of lockdown I’m going to hire one for half a day. However seems that a well optioned one is going to be knocking on the door of £50k.
