K series or VX for road use?

Hi there,

Looking at possibilities for road use only. Budget of £8 - 8.5K. Not too keen on the crossflow as its getting very long in the tooth. That leaves either a 1.4K or a 1.6VX at this price level. Am I correct in thinking that the VX cars are all live axle and the K cars are all de-dion?

Any advice?

Stretch the budget to find a 1.6 K Roadsport if you can

and if you go for the 1.4K I hear that you really need the Caterham 6 speed 'box to get the best from it.

I've just bought a live axle 1600 8v VX for around that money. It's not going on to the road until April as I've had it in pieces to refresh and service some parts.

I was tempted to go for a 10/11k car but figured the 2/3k step was a little unnecessary for what is a similar car and the VX is a good introduction to Caterham ownership.

I've got a 1.4K and I absolutely love it. I know its "only" got about 110bhp, but with the weight, it is, in comparison to most cars, very quick. Having had it for about 9 months, I have decided to upgrade to a more powerful version of the 1.4 engine, but I don't really "need" it, just "want" it.

It's got the 5 speed box too, and although I have never driven a car with a 6 speed, I don't find the 5 speed to be a problem.

I would highly recommend the K series as a great introduction. Good luck and happy hunting!
