Handbrake '87 Caterham

I have just bought a 1987 1600 X-flow Caterham and wonder if it is possible to replace the handbrake mechanism under the dash with the later type that sits on the tunnel?

Has anyone done this?

I don't think it's really feasible. The later Caterhams have had the tunnel modified (with extra tubing) to make up for the fact that a slot has to be cut into it to accomodate the handbrake.

Leave it where it is - it's an original Chapman feature and the last of Chapman's original ideas to finally be changed by Caterham Cars.

You get a slightly longer lever under the dash also so there is more chance of it actually working. The main advantage i can see of the tunnel mounted handbrake is a good place to keep your mobile and a packet of polos beyond that there is no real advantage

Real Caterham drivers don't use the handbrake anyway.

With my harness on, I can't actually reach mine

Oh I see. As in not using the brakes at all.

What you really want actually is a hydraulic handbrake, now that does have a place in a caterham
