When checking the compression on my 1700 Xflow I find that pots 1 & 2 show a reading of 5 whilst 3 & 4 show a reading of 7. I have no idea what the compression should be but the car is running ok. Is this something I should be concerned about?

It would be more usefull if you could state what psi that is on your gauge.
As long as the highest and lowest is about 10-12% difference then there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks. Cylinders 1 & 2 read 72 psi, 3 & 4 read 116 psi so 1 & 2 are about 38% down. I have modified a spark plug so I can hook up my compressor to it and pump some air into the chambers. I suspect some valves are not seating properly.

I tested cyclinder 1 and get air escaping alright. I cannot tell whether it is going into the inlet or exhaust manifold but it is going somewhere so it looks like the head has got to come off.

David my money is on the head gasket failing between cylinder #1 and #2.

Either way, as you say it's a head off job.
