Stick with it!! The game can be very slow at first, as soon as PSN is back up and running, will happily send over a few cars for you, to help make initial progress a little quicker.
To start off, look to get the specials & online special events (when working) done, as these are the better events to reward you with money and XP points to move up the ranks quicker.

Getting all golds on the first set of licences will get you a Tommykaira (sp?) something that should get you through quite a few early races until you either start buying or start winning better stuff.
Might take a while though - a couple of the tests are pigs (at least they are if you're a bit rubbish like me) and your other half will think you're a mentalist continually repeating the same corner over and over to shave off a couple of hundredths in order to win gold...
Also you might find it interesting to find one of the PH time trial threads in this forum which I think tend to use standard cars (rather than customised) from the Arcade mode, just to measure your pace against the people on here that have been playing since November, and who don't suck! I had about 8-10 laps to see how I compared on the last one and didn't get within 7 seconds of the quicker times! Acceptable on the Nurburgring, much less so on Fuji or whichever track it was where a lap is only just over 90 secs...! (I didn't post my best time in that thread!)

Best tip is to do the Kart races in Special - loads of credits to start with. Then buy an MX5, do the Amateur level MX5 race in B-Spce and win the Mazda Furai. That takes care of most of the first set of races and certainly earns you enough credits to get some other stuff to play with.
Apart from that: if you haven't played GT games before, don't discount the difference between tyres: softer makes a significant speed difference. And whenever you buy a car, change the oil immediately, even if they're brand new. Usually gets you about 10% more horsepower...

Dont sell ANYTHING you win, likelihood is that it can be used in later A-Spec modes, even if you complete all A-Spec its eleigible for dont sell, a similar vehicle will be needed in B-Spec etc.

My tip would be, as soon as PSN is back up, get online. Seasonal events, the online car dealership, online racing and the latest updates make a huge difference to the enjoyment of GT5. Plus, every so often there will be a seasonal event with HUGE credit and XP rewards.
B Spec can be spectacularly dull but it is a good way to win cars.

If you want to eventually try to collect all the cars in the game, this is a good tip as for the standard cars, you would need to wait for them to come back around in the used car dealership before you get them again - and that can take ages.-crookedtail- said:

This is a great tip to follow. The temptation when starting out is to blow all your credits on tuning up a car to win a race, but you can save a lot of credits and time by just buying the best tyres you can afford.In regards to the Tyres. I couldnt agree more, as explained above I have an obsession with the supercars in the game and i constantly tune/tweak them and then pit them against one another, I then pit them head to head around the Rome Track (in the European championship - $80k per race

I was fiddling with my MP12 trying to beat the record set by my 458, regardless of how hard I pushed I just couldnt scratch the 3-4 seconds off my lap time (Rome is a small circuit so this is a lot!) to compete. After a lot of spins and crashes I was ready to give up, then I spotted it, the car was running on the 2nd best tyres (Intermediate Racing) not the proper racing slicks, i fitted these and the car was 4-5 seconds quicker round the track. Comparing racing slicks versus anything else is chalk and cheese, If I was starting over - tyres would be my first mods over Exhaust/Filter/ECU.

Pretty much everything I have in on sports softs most of the time. I only have three cars that need the racing softs: a Ford GT with 690bhp, a Lambo Murcielago SV with ~850bhp, and the RM Corvette ZR1
(Of course the Formula GT has them too. But I never drive that in A-Spec).

Done my B license, some of the A license, karts, campers, nascar and amg special events on beginner and some on intermediate as well.
Almost wet my pants with excitement when I went into the regular events and saw the Sunday Cup with Autumn Ring Mini , many a happy race in the early GT games on this with 900bhp> Skylines
Bought a Corsa and barried it, big zorst and big roof wing on it , actually not a bad car for the early events, winning everything so far...165 bhp approx...
See that PSN is back on now so as soon as they give me my reset email RAK1981 will be getting in on some online races, think I have a few of you on PSN already from the GT5P time trials and F1-2010.
